Citing a Book

Doe, J. (2014). Effective Communication. London: SAGE

Author, A. (Year of publication). Title of work. Location: Publisher.

Last name Book: Italicize Include Name of

/ Surname Do not main title both city & publishing
include day state if it’s company
Initial of the and month an
first name American

For references to e-book editions, be sure to include the type and version of e-book
you are referencing (e.g., "[Kindle DX version]" or “[Acrobat Reader version]”).

Note:

• For all APA citations, use only the author’s last name (or surname) in the
citation. E.g., Doe (not John).

• For sources with two authors, list their last names and initials. Use the
ampersand instead of "and." For examples,

Wegener, D. T., & Petty, R. E. (1994). Mood management across affective

states: The hedonic contingency hypothesis. Journal of Personality and Social
Psychology, 66(5), 1034-1048.

• For sources with three or more authors, list last names and initials. Use
commas to separate authors’ names, while the last author name is preceded
again by ampersand. For examples,

Kernis, M. H., Cornell, D. P., Sun, C. R., Berry, A., Harlow, T., & Bach, J. S.
(1993). There's more to self-esteem than whether it is high or low: The
importance of stability of self-esteem. Journal of Personality and Social
Psychology, 66(5), 1190-1204.

• Each punctuation (full stop, comma, semi-colon, parenthesis etc.) MUST be

positioned accurately.

• There should be spacing after each comma, full stop or semi-colon.
