Binary Review
Worksheet

This resource is a simple binary review worksheet utilizing a simple five bit alphabet code.
The students will decode binary into alphabet characters to decipher a message as well as
encode a message into binary numbers.

Students should have some grasp of counting in binary in order to complete the worksheet. I
have been using a wonderful curriculum, CS Unplugged, to teach our third and fourth grade
classes about computer science and introducing them to binary code. CS Unplugged is a great
resource. Most, if not all, of my resources are extensions of CS Unplugged activities and
lessons. You can find information here, http://csunplugged.org/. The curriculum is licensed
creative commons and is easily adaptable.

This worksheet was completed by third graders with no issues, but I had already spent two
class periods discussing binary code with them. This resource is usable all the way through
middle school, and perhaps for introductory high school classes as a quick review.

There is a key provided. This worksheet is absolutely free, and licensed creative commons
attribution noncommercial share alike 4.0. If you enjoy this resource, I have other binary
lessons and resources available..

Thank you!

Matt
Binary Review
Let’s practice some binary decoding and encoding. Using the simple alphabet code below, decode the
message on the left. For the message on the right, encode the letters into the proper binary numbers.
The first one is done for you.
