FIVE INSTANCES OF ‘HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT’ FROM

QURAN AND HADITH (Sayings of Prophet Muhammed(pbuh))

1.MOTIVATION AND COMMITMENT

Motivation is the inner drive that directs a person’s behaviour toward goals. In HRM,
motivation refers to person’s desire to do his best for the job or to exert the maximum effort
to perform assigned tasks. Human Resource Management (HRM) has the capacity of
influencing the organizational behaviour of the employees, thereby ensuring achievement of
the corporate objectives. HRM paves way for the firm’s performance which leads to
Organizational Commitment. Commitment is the clear decision to act on what motivates you
and motivation is the drive that fuels the commitment. Commitment to do work can only be
achieved through motivation. The way a manager behaves with the subordinates determines
the level of his motivation and commitment to a great extent.

The Holy Quran speaks about this golden rule:

[3:159] ‘(telling the Prophet) if you had been stern and fierce of heart they (the companions
and followers) would have disappeared from around you. So pardon them and ask
forgiveness for them and consult them in the conduct of affairs’.
This emphasizes upon two aspects: Firstly, the compassionate and sympathetic behaviour
towards companions and followers and secondly, the adoption of participatory approach
when dealing with them is the most effective way of management.
If this golden rule is not exhibited, then “they will disappear from you”. This means that they
won’t pay attention nor any interest in you or what your work entails. These two aspects`
play vital role in the motivation of subordinates and inculcating in them the spirit of
commitment and passion for work.
2.LEADERSHIP
Leadership is the action of leading a group of people or an organization in an efficient
manner. Without leadership, every member of the group will go in his own direction instead
of following the decision of the group or participate in teamwork. Normally, HR
professionals are expected to select and help to develop the future leaders for an organization
by carefully providing imperative processes, proper means and their perspective in this regard.
For an organization to flourish and survive, it is necessary that the right employee is retained,
the talent is identified and the employee is equipped with all the necessary support so that they
become ready to take on leadership role in future for the benefit of the organization.
This principle comes from the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammed(pbuh) which says: ‘When
three men travel together, they should make one of them their leader’ (Abu Dawood, no.
2608). This Hadith emphasis on the importance of leadership.
3.ORGANIZATIONAL INTEREST IS GIVEN MORE IMPORTANCE
The interest of the organization is given more importance as compared to the individual
interest. The personal interest of any employee or group of employees should not take
precedence over the interest of the organization as a whole.
Prophet Mohammad(pbuh) said, ‘I swear by the one who owns my life, nobody can be
honest, unless and until he like the things for his brother that he likes for himself’.
4.ORIENTATION
Many organizations do not provide adequate orientation to the new employees. This is the
fundamental step to help a new employee to adjust himself with the employer, co-workers
and the new job. Employee orientation program must include the objectives and goals of the
organization and how the employee can help to achieve the long-term and short-term goals of
the organization. Providing intensive orientation to the employee is one of the major
functions of human resource management. The program must help the employee to know his
assigned duties and his exact job description, job role, and the relationship of his position to
other positions in the organization. It provides clarification to the employee to take an active
role in the organization. According this concept, a Manager is now understood as the person
who works through others. A good manager is therefore a person who not only knows what is
to be done but exactly how to get it done.
The Holy Quran confirm:
[43:32]’We raise some of them above others in ranks, so that some may command work from
others...’
This encompasses the entire philosophy and wisdom of modern management. It emphasizes
the creation of appropriate hierarchies and the division of responsibilities subject to
individual capabilities.
5.WAGES OR COMPENSATION
Compensation is the consideration or rewards that the employees receive in return for their
work. It includes payments like salary, bonuses, profit sharing, overtime pay, recognition
rewards and sales commission, etc. It can also be non-monetary like company-paid car,
company-paid housing and stock opportunities.
Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) says that the workers should be paid before drying his sweat, this
helps to keep your workers and employees happy.

Compensation is a vital part of human resource management, which helps in encouraging

and motivating the employees and improving organizational effectiveness. In an
Organization, the workers must be paid reasonable and fair remuneration for their services.
