Admittance Matrix: PPT Submitted by RC - 1308 - 792, RIT, Berhampur Is Licensed Under The

The document discusses admittance matrix which is used for power flow analysis. It provides the following key information: 1. An admittance matrix (Ybus) represents the electric network and relationships between nodes using a nodal admittance method. 2. Ybus is a nxn matrix where n is the number of buses. The diagonal elements represent self-admittances of nodes and the off-diagonals represent mutual admittances between nodes. 3. Ybus has properties of sparsity due to most nodes only connecting to nearby nodes, and its columns summing to zero to satisfy Kirchhoff's current law.

Need of Admittance matrix
 Mathematical model and solution of electric network is
the basis of modern power system analysis, i.e. in studies
of power flow, fault analysis, and contingency analysis.

 Electric network is constituted of transmission lines,

transformers, parallel or series capacitors, and other static
elements.

 We can establish equivalent circuit of any complicated

network and analyze it according to the AC circuit laws.
 The electric network is represented by the linear lumped
parameter model: for studies at synchronous frequency.
 For electromagnetic transient analysis: the high
frequency phenomena and wave processes should be
considered.
 Equivalent circuits described by distributed parameters.
 First step for solving power flow problems is to
develop nodal matrix
Nodal matrix
 An electric network can be always represented by
 A Nodal Admittance Matrix
 A Nodal Impedance Matrix
 The nodal admittance matrix (Ybus ) of a typical power
system is large and sparse.

 The nodal impedance matrix (Zbus) is used in fault analysis

of power systems.

 Usually Nodal voltage method is used for development of

Ybus
Bus Admittance Matrix

Ibus = Ybus Vbus

 Ibus is the vector of injected currents
 Vbus is the vector of bus voltage from reference node
 Ybus is the bus admittance matrix

Computation of Equations

Rearranging equations:
Self Admittances: Mutual Admittances:
Properties of Ybus
For n no. buses the size of Ybus is [nxn]
 The diagonal elements are the sum of all the
admittances connected to the respective nodes.
= for j i

 The off-diagonal elements are the negative of the sum

of all the admittances connected directly between the
nodes.

 Sum of the elements in each column is zero, then the

Ybus is singular.
Properties of Ybus
 A typical power system network, each bus is
connected by few nearby bus, which cause many off-
diagonal elements to be zero.

 Many zero off-diagonal matrix is called sparse matrix.

 Sparsity of Ybus is defined as,

Where n is the no. of buses
