SPECIFICATION – GENERAL DESIGN OF INSTRUMENT INSTALLATIONS

1.0 GENERAL

1.1 SCOPE OF SPECIFICATION

A. This specification addresses the design of instrument impulse tubing installations,


instrument air supply piping and tubing installations, electrical signal installations
and instrument mounting installations which are not an integral part of a piping
system or packaged unit.

1.2 SPECIFICATION INCLUDES

A. All instrument process and utility piping and piping components, except the root
valve connections used to connect instruments to other piping or equipment.

B. All instrument air lines and sub-header piping, except the main instrument air header
and its root valve connections.

C. Support for instruments, impulse tubing and air piping.

2.0 GENERAL INSTALLATION DESIGN

2.1 MATERIALS

A. Materials for analyzer, flow, level, pressure and temperature instrument process
installations shall be selected with regard to the application and environment in
which they are used. Issues such as external corrosion resistance, vibration
resistance and fire protection shall be considered.

B. Installation material shall be in accordance with the projects Control Systems Design
Instrument Material Specification. Installations which are part of packaged items
may be to the manufacturer's standards, providing it meets the specified design and
applicable code requirements.

C. Pipe or tubing size shall normally be 1/4" (8mm) for pneumatic, 3/8" (12mm) for
instrument air lines and 1/2” (14mm) for instrument process lines except for
connections at instruments, which shall be manufacturer's standard.

D. Static pressure transmitters shall be equipped with a two valve manifold. Differential
pressure transmitters shall be equipped with a three or five valve manifold.

E. Static level transmitters shall be equipped with a two valve manifold. Differential
level transmitters with a constant head chamber for high temperature and pressure
shall be equipped with a three valve manifold.

2.2 SEALS AND PURGES

A. When necessary to prevent corrosive or solids bearing fluids from entering


instruments, local panels or instrument lines, seals or purges shall be installed.

B. Seals or purges may be used in place of heat tracing. See Instrument Protection –
Seals, Purges and Heat Tracing, Section: 6.9 of this specification for guidelines.

2.3 FIELD PRESSURE TESTING

A. Instrument installations shall be field pressure tested to ensure the integrity of the
field installed instrument piping is in accordance with MARAFIQ’s specification.

2.4 INSULATION

A. Instrument impulse tubing/piping connecting to high temperature systems, which can


exceed 140°F (60°C) during blow down of the impulse line, shall be insulated for
personnel protection.

3.0 DESIGN INSTALLATION

3.1 FIELD INSTRUMENTS - LOCATION

A. Instruments installed in vapor or gas service shall be mounted above the process
sensing point. Instruments installed in liquid, steam or condensable vapor service
shall be mounted below the process sensing point. Instruments in vacuum service
shall be mounted above the process sensing point. If accessibility, visibility, or
clearance requirements preclude any of these situations, provisions will be made in
the instrument piping configuration to insure operation of the instrument. Close
coupled pressure gauges are mounted above the sensing point, and are excluded from
that mentioned above.

B. Indicating instruments which must be visible for automatic control adjustment or


manual operation should be visible at the adjustment or operating point. If plot or
piping arrangement precludes this, other provisions should be made for indication at
the adjustment or operating point. Indicating instruments which are not in the above
category should be visible from operating aisles or passageways. See Accessibility
Chart, Section 5.2.3 of this specification for guidelines.

C. For Differential Pressure (DP) type transmitters with remote diaphragms and
capillary seal legs, consult manufacture specifications and recommendations for
vertical process tap distances greater than 25’ (7.6M) apart and for applications in
vacuum service or process temperature exceeding 350°F (176°C).

D. Instrument primary block (root) valves at piping or equipment connections should


generally be accessible from grade, platform, and stairway, permanent or portable
ladder. Access from portable ladder shall be limited to twelve 12’ (3.6M). A tie-off
point will be required for use of a portable ladder. As an exception, Instrument
primary block (root) valves located in a pipe way are considered accessible,
regardless of elevation.

3.2 FIELD INSTRUMENTS - CLEARANCES / ACCESSABILITY

A. Instruments should be located so as to maintain clearances required for walkways,


drop zones, access ways, and operation and maintenance of valves and equipment.

B. Instruments shall be located so as to provide the space necessary for operation and
maintenance to service the instruments.

C. When accessibility or clearance requirements preclude the desired mounting practice,


provisions shall be made in the installation assembly configuration to ensure proper
operation of the instrument.

D. In general, the following three access types can be considered for the instrument
types listed in Table 1.

Type I : Instruments shall be remote mounted as near to the sensing point as


practical.

Type II : Recording and/or control instruments shall be remote mounted at grade or


outside of platform handrails. This excludes displacer type level
controllers.

Type III : When practical, install remote mounted instruments at grade or platform,
grouping together on common supports.

3.3 FIELD INSTRUMENTS - TUBING, ROUTING, AND SUPPORT

A. Instrument impulse tubing and air piping shall be installed in a manner that allows
ease of access to instruments for maintenance, calibration, and removal of adjacent
instrument and/or equipment.

B. Instrument tubing shall have horizontal and vertical support spacing as follows:

C. Continuous support of tubing, when required, shall normally be in tubing tray.

D. Instrument tubing may be supported by pipe supports or any permanent structure,


except process or utility piping. Instrument tubing supports shall not be attached to
process or utility piping under any condition.

E. Tubing shall be installed in a neat manner with no crimping, flattening, or inadequate


radius bends. Tube ends shall be cut square and de-burred after cutting tube to
desired length.

F. Tube bending tools shall be used to form tubing bends. Tubing shall not be marked
or scored. Hand bending of tubes without the use of tube benders is not permitted.

G. Tubing bends shall be used in lieu of tube or pipe fittings where practical, when
installing instrument tubing for process impulse lines or air supplies.

H. The minimum tubing bend radius shall be in accordance with recommendations of


the tubing and tube bender manufacturers and or the following:

 1/4" (8mm) O.D. tube = 9/16" (1.43cm) radius.

 3/8" (12mm) O.D. tube = 15/16" (2.38cm) radius.

 1/2" (14mm) O.D. tube = 1 1/2" (3.81cm) radius.

 Tubing must have a minimum length of straight run adjacent to bends to allow
correct installation of tube fittings.

I. Sufficient flexibility shall be provided in instrument systems, which connects to


piping lines and equipment, to allow for expansion.

J. Tube fittings, such as unions and tees, installed in individual or parallel process
impulse tube runs shall be staggered from each other and raised by tube bends to
allow access to fitting nuts. This is necessary to aid in removal and replacement of
tubes without distorting or damaging the individual tube or adjacent tubes.

K. Tubing shall be assembled with the specified tube fittings in accordance with the
fitting manufacturer’s recommendations. The proper tools recommended by the
manufacturer shall be used to assure proper installation and tightness.

L. Reductions in line size utilizing screwed construction shall be accomplished by the


use of swage nipples. Reductions in line size utilizing tubing and tube fitting
construction shall be accomplished by the use of reducing tube fittings.

M. Slope instrument impulse lines up a minimum of 1/2" per foot (1cm per 30cm) from
process sensing point towards instrument in a vapor service, and slope instrument
impulse lines down a minimum of 1/2" per foot (1cm per 30cm) from process
sensing point towards instrument in a liquid service. See the analyzer, flow, level,
and pressure installation detail drawings for required direction of slope.

N. Tubing shall not be routed along or supported by handrails.

O. Remote mounted flow, level, and pressure transmitters or switches shall have their
process impulse lines supported a minimum of every 6’ (1.8m).

P. Tubing shall be supported to avoid vibration, tube sagging, and to provide


protections of the tube in areas where mechanical damage is likely. Structural
channel or angle, raceways, or trays shall be used for this purpose.

Q. Process impulse lines not requiring heating for process requirements from the
primary block (root) valves to the instrument shall be bare 1/2" (14mm) outside
diameter (O.D.), .049" (1.2mm) wall thickness, seamless tubing.

R. Removal of external coatings such as PVC from tubing shall be accomplished using
only tools designed for the task. Copper tubing which has had the external coating
removed in order to make up in tube fitting shall have any remaining exposed areas
protected with a vinyl spray coating or polyvinylchloride (PVC) tape wrapping in
accordance with the tubing manufacturer’s recommendations.

S. Tubing shall be routed to avoid areas of excess heat. Routing over pumps handling
flammable materials shall be avoided, except when routing to or from the device
requiring the signal.

T. Instrument tubing and piping shall generally be routed within pipeways and areas
provided for the routing of plant piping.

3.4 FIELD INSTRUMENTS - TUBING/PIPING - SEALANTS AND LUBRICANTS

A. Sealant or lubricant for threaded connections in instrument process impulse tubing


and air piping installations shall meet the requirements of the process service. See the
project Control Systems Design Instrument Material Specifications.

B. Lubricant for bolt threads shall be a nonvolatile, anti-seize type, such as FEL PRO
“Heavy Duty Anti-Seize” and shall be applied to the threads of studs and to the
bearing surface of the nuts used on all flange closures. The lubricant shall have a
temperature rating greater than the line design temperature and shall provide a long
enduring protective thread coating. See Control Systems Design Instrument Material
Specifications.

C. Sealant or lubricant for instrument tubing and air piping installations shall meet the
requirements of the service.

D. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tape shall not be used as a thread lubricant/sealant on


pipe or tube fitting threads for Process and Instrument Air Supply installations
downstream of an air filter regulator. See the project Control Systems Design
Instrument Material Specifications.

3.5 FIELD INSTRUMENTS - TUBING/PIPING - SEAL WELDING

A. Instrument connections in the following services may be considered to be seal


welded: hydrocarbon, flammable, pyrophoric, toxic, leathals, hydrogen and steam
services. Ultimately, owner or project piping specifications shall dictate which
services are to be seal welded.

B. The following are not seal welded:

 Threaded connections at instruments.

 Tubing nuts, unions, caps, and plugs.

 Screwed plugs in valved vents and drains.

Note: Threaded compound is not used on joints to be seal welded

C. In the Process Services, described in Section 3.5A, piping may supply a socket weld
primary block (root) valve, which is preferred. In this case, socket weld tube fittings
shall be used.

4.0 INSTRUMENT INSTALLATION APPLICATIONS

4.1 AIR SUPPLY INSTRUMENT INSTALLATION - GENERAL NOTES

A. Materials for instrument air supply installations shall be selected with regard to the
application and environment in which they are used. Issues such as external
corrosion resistance, vibration resistance and fire protection will be considered.

B. Polyethylene tubing may be used when MARAFIQ requests and approves its use in
applications where it is desirable to have a valve fail to a specific position due to loss
of air when the tube melts in a fire.

C. 316SS tube fittings shall be used to connect instrument air supply tubing to air users.
Plastic tube fittings or metal tube fittings with plastic ferrules shall not be used.

D. Piping shall furnish air supply lateral branch connections, 1" (2 cm) minimum, on the
top of the horizontal primary Instrument Air Header. Piping shall also install valves
at each lateral branch connection point on the header and drain valve at the header
low point.

E. Reductions in line size utilizing screwed construction shall be accomplished by the


use of swage nipples. Reductions in line size utilizing tubing and tube fitting
construction shall be accomplished by the use of reducing tube fittings.

F. Threaded end pipe-to-pipe or swage nipple-to-pipe joints shall be made utilizing


threaded couplings.

G. Manual valves in Instrument Air service shall be equipped with oval handles.

4.2 ANALYZER INSTRUMENT INSTALLATION - GENERAL NOTES

A. Tubing is typically 316SS seamless, but all cases shall be compatible with process
fluids.

B. Processes requiring tubing to be heat traced to 250°F (121°C) shall use self limiting
electric tracing.

C. Processes requiring tubing to be heat traced to 400°F (204°C) shall use constant
wattage electric tracing.

D. Process sample connection systems shall be located as close as possible to the sample
inlet (supply) process connection.

4.3 FLOW INSTRUMENT INSATALLATION - GENERAL NOTES

A. All process flow connection orientation and primary block (root) valves will be
provided by piping per Piping Specification MQ-SP-P-5009.

B. Process line flow connections shall have primary block (root) valves provided by
piping for each flow instrument.

Exception: When two or more flow instruments are installed in parallel as one
installation due to process measurements.

C. Instrument manifolds with integral block and bleed valves shall be provided at the
instruments to provide a means for isolation of the instrument from process service
for maintenance or calibration.

D. Local flow indicators, when part of a flow loop (transmitter output), shall be located
where it is easily readable by an operator from that loops control valve manual by-
pass valve.

E. When a process pressure transmitter is to be installed in the same installation as the


process differential pressure flow transmitter, the process pressure impulse line shall
be connected to the high pressure process flow impulse line (upstream flow
connection) to eliminate measurement fluctuation.

F. Mounting in Gas or Vapor Service.

 Line Mount - Flow transmitters in gas and vapor service may be line mounted
above and as close to process flow connections as possible. They shall be
mounted along side of the process pipe with the transmitter process connections
above the primary block (root) valves. Tubing for the installation shall slope up
without pocketing the service from the primary block (root) valves of the orifice
to the transmitter process connections.

 Remote Mount - Flow transmitters in gas and vapor service may be remote
mounted above the process flow connections. They shall be located on
platforms or other accessible locations.

G. Mounting in Liquid, Steam, or Condensing Service.

 Line Mount - Flow transmitters in liquid, steam, or condensing service may be


line mounted below and as close to process flow connections as possible. They
shall be mounted along side of the process pipe with the transmitter process
connections one inch below the primary block (root) valves. Tubing for the
installation shall slope down without pocketing the service from the primary
block (root) valves of the orifice to the transmitter process connections.

 Remote Mount - Flow transmitters in liquid, steam, or condensing service may


be remote mounted below the process flow connections. They shall be mounted
at grade, on platforms or other accessible locations.

H. Process flow installations requiring purging shall have a check valve installed in the
outlet line of the rotameter to prevent back flow.

I. Transmitters with remote diaphragm seals and capillary seal legs shall be mounted
below the process flow connections.

J. Capillary seal legs shall be mechanically protected and properly supported. Long
capillary seal legs shall be protected from direct sunlight to minimize measurement
errors.

K. Orifice flanges rated at 600 PSI (4136kPa) and below will have 1/2" (M15) process
connections. Orifice flanges rated at 900 PSI (6205kPa) and above will have 3/4"
(M20) process connections.

4.4 LEVEL INSTRUMENT INSTALLATION - GENERAL NOTES

A. All vessels, vessel bridles, and tank process level connections orientation and
primary block (root) valves will be provided by piping per Piping Specification MQ-
SP-P-5009.

B. Level instruments shall be mounted as close to process level connections as possible.

C. Level transmitters should be positioned such that the transmitters are readily
accessible from the platform or from grade.

D. Differential pressure transmitters used for process level measurement shall be


mounted with the high pressure connection (lower level connection on vessel) and as
close as possible to this connection.

E. Process level installation seal fluid or purge fluid shall be compatible with the
process and ambient temperature extremes.

F. Transmitters with remote diaphragm seals and capillary seal legs shall be mounted at
or below the high pressure level connection (lower level connection on vessel).
Excess capillary should be carefully coiled and secured near the transmitter.

G. Capillary seal legs shall be mechanically protected and properly supported. Long
capillary seal legs shall be protected from direct sunlight to minimize measurement
errors.

H. Process level installations requiring purging shall have a check valve installed in the
outlet line of the rotameter to prevent back flow.

I. Local level indicators, when part of a Level loop (transmitter output) shall be located
where it is easily readable by an operator from that loops control valve manual by-
pass valve.

J. Two valve instrument manifolds with two integral block valves shall be provided at
the instrument to provide a means of isolation of the instrument from process service
for maintenance and calibration when the level application requires the use of a non-
process medium seal leg or legs.

K. Three valve instrument manifolds with two integral block valves and one by-pass
valve shall be provided at the instrument to provide a means of isolation of the
instrument from process service for maintenance and calibration when the level
application allows the use of process filled leg or legs.

4.5 PRESSURE INSTRUMENT INSTALLATION - GENERAL NOTES

A. All process pressure connection orientation and primary block (root) valves will be
provided by piping per Piping Specification MQ-SP-P-5009.

B. Process line pressure connections shall have primary block (root) valves provided by
Piping for each pressure instrument.

C. Exception: When a pressure instrument is installed as part of a flow measurement


installation, the primary block (root) valves will be provided for the flow instrument
and Pressure impulse line connection will be on the high pressure impulse line of the
flow instrument installation.

D. Siphons shall be used on process pressure gauge (PI) installations in steam and other
high temperature condensable vapor services.

E. Pulsation dampers shall be used on reciprocating pump and compressor discharge


process pressure gauge (PI) installations.

F. Instrument manifolds with integral block and bleed valves shall be provided at the
instrument as means for isolation of the instrument from process service for
maintenance and calibration.

G. Mounting in Gas and Vapor Service

 Line Mount - Pressure transmitters in gas and vapor service may be line
mounted above and as close to process pressure connection as possible. They
may be line mounted with 3’ (1.5M) of the process pressure connection and shall
be located along the process pipe in order to have the transmitter process
connection located above the primary block (root) valves of the process pressure
connection. Tubing/pipe for the installation shall slope up without pocketing the
service from the primary block (root) valves process pressure connection to the
transmitter process connections.

 Remote Mount - Pressure transmitters in gas and vapor service may be remote
mounted above the process pressure connection. They shall be located on
platforms or other accessible locations.

H. Mounting in Liquid, Steam, or Condensing Service

 Line Mount - Pressure transmitters in liquid, steam, or condensing service may


be line mounted below and as close to process pressure connection as possible.
They may be line mounted within 3’ (1.5M) of the process pressure connections
and shall be located and mounted along the process pipe in order to have the
transmitter process connection located below the primary block (root) valves of
the process pressure connection. Tubing/pipe for the installation shall slope
down without pocketing the service from the primary block (root) valves process
pressure connection to the transmitter process connections.

 Remote Mount - Pressure transmitters in liquid, steam, or condensing service


may be remote mounted below the process pressure connection. They shall be
mounted at grade, on platforms or other accessible locations.

I. Transmitters with remote diaphragm seals and capillary seal legs shall be mounted at
or below the process pressure connection. Capillary seal legs shall be mechanically
protected and properly supported. Long capillary seal legs shall be protected from
direct sunlight to minimize measurement errors.

J. Close coupled pressure gauges (PI’s) are normally mounted above the process
measurement sensing point whether they are on a horizontal or vertical pipe.

K. Differential pressure transmitters used to measure low pressures with low pressure
tap vented to atmosphere shall have vented tap protected from wind velocity
changes. Vented tap shall also have a vent screen installed to protect the instrument
from particle or insect intrusion.

L. Pressure switches shall be installed with adequate valves and connections to allow
testing and calibration without removing switch from the process installation.

M. Process pressure installations requiring purging shall have a check valve installed in
the outlet line of the rotameter to prevent back flow.

N. Isolation block and bleed valves shall be provided at the instrument to provide a
means of isolation for the instrument from process service for maintenance and
calibration.

O. When process pressure transmitter is to be installed in the same installation as a


process differential pressure transmitter, the process pressure impulse line shall be
connected to the process differential pressure impulse high pressure process impulse
line (upstream flow connection) to eliminate measurement fluctuation.

4.6 INSTRUMENT SIGNAL INSTALLATION - GENERAL NOTES

A. Remote mounted I/P transducer pneumatic output signal tubing between transducer
and final control element shall be as short as possible to minimize pneumatic signal
lag time.

4.7 TEMPERATURE INSTRUMENT INSTALLATION - GENERAL NOTES

A. All process temperature connection orientation, type and construction shall match
applicable process piping specification provided by piping per Piping Specification
MQ-SP-P-5009.

B. All temperature sensors, with the exception of those measuring skin temperatures,
ambient air, motor windings and bearing temperatures, shall be installed in
thermowells.

C. Thermocouple and thermometer stems shall bottom out in thermowell when


installed.

D. Temperature transmitters shall be mounted near the temperature element at a location


easily accessible for maintenance.

4.8 INSTRUMENT ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION - GENERAL NOTES

A. For outdoor locations, conduit shall be Rigid Galvanized Steel unless otherwise
noted.

B. All conduits shall be a minimum size of 3/4" (M16) unless otherwise noted.

C. Conduit drains or drain seals shall be installed at low points in the conduit system.
Drainage provisions shall be made in the bottom of all pull boxes, junction boxes,
control panels, etc.

D. Fittings shall be installed with the cover opening accessible to facilitate ease of
wire/cable pulling.

E. For outdoor locations, wherever possible, conduit/cabling shall enter equipment from
the bottom (primary) or side (secondary). Special permission must be obtained by
MARAFIQ where top entry is necessary. If top entry is authorized then a drain type
sealing fittings shall be used.

F. Sealing fittings shall not be filled with a compound until approved by MARAFIQ.
After testing is completed, only approved compound and fiber material shall be used.

G. Instrument Electrical conduit shall be installed in a neat manner with no crimping,


flattening or inadequate radius bends.

H. Conduit bends shall be used in lieu of conduit fittings where practical when installing
instrument electrical conduit.

I. Conduit bending tools shall be used to form instrument electrical conduit bends.
Hand bending of instrument electrical conduit without the use of conduit benders is
not permitted.

J. Instrument Electrical conduit shall not be routed along or supported from handrails.

K. Instrument Electrical conduit shall generally be routed within pipeways and areas
provided for routing of same.

L. Instrument Electrical conduit shall be supported to avoid vibration or sagging and to


provide protection of the conduit system in areas where mechanical damage is likely.

N. Construction contractor is to size and field route Instrument Electrical conduits from
field instruments to the field instrument junction boxes or local panel or remote I/O
racks as required.

O. Instrument Electrical conduit shall not exceed two inches 2"(M53) in size.

P. GUA type condulet fittings shall be used for instrument installation details only.
Form 7 conduit fittings shall be used in the remainder of Instrument Electrical
conduit systems.

Q. Materials for instrument electrical installations shall be selected with regard to the
application and environment in which they are used. Issues such as Area Electrical
Classification, external corrosion resistance, vibration resistance and fire protection
will be considered.

R. Materials for instrument junction box and/or local panel installations shall be
selected with regard to the application and environment in which they are used.
Issues such as external corrosion resistance, vibration resistance and fire protection
will be considered.

4.9 INSTRUMENT PROTECTION - SEALS, PURGES, AND HEAT TRACING

A. Seals and purges shall be provided when necessary to prevent corrosive or solid
bearing materials from entering instrument process impulse signal lines or
instruments.

B. Where diaphragm seals are most applicable, they shall be given first consideration.

C. Instruments in process services which have low pour points may have heat tracing
requirements regardless of ambient temperatures. Heat tracing for instruments in this
category will be determined on a one by one basis.

D. “Light Trace” shall be utilized for process streams such as gases, light hydrocarbons
and intermediate distillates which have Pour Points above 32°F (0°C).

E. “Heavy Trace” shall be utilized for process streams such as heavy residuals and
process chemicals such as Phenol that solidify above 32°F (0°C).

F. Heated process impulse lines from the primary block valves (root valves) to the
instrument shall be pre-insulated electrically heated 1/2" (14mm) outside diameter
(O.D.) seamless, .049" (1.2mm) wall thickness tubing with self regulating heating
cable. It shall be used for instrument process impulse line maintaining instrument
process impulse lines and/or winterization (freeze protection) to 250°F (121°C).

G. Heated process impulse lines from the primary block (root) valves to the instrument
shall be pre-insulated electrically heated 1/2" (14mm) outside diameter (O.D.)
seamless, .049" (1.2mm) wall thickness tubing with constant wattage heating cable.
It shall be used for instrument process impulse line maintaining instrument process
impulse lines and/or winterization (freeze protection) to 400°F (204°C).

H. Heated process impulse lines from the primary block valves (root valves) to the
instrument shall be pre-insulated steam or hot fluid heated 1/2" (14mm) outside
diameter (O.D.) seamless, .049" (1.2mm) wall thickness tubing with 3/8" (12mm)
outside diameter (O.D.) seamless, .049" (1.2mm) wall thickness heating tube. It shall
be used for “Light Trace” where heating tube is not in contact with instrument
process impulse line to provide winterization (freeze protection) and / or the
maintaining of instrument process impulse lines to 250°F (121°C).

I. Heated process impulse lines from the primary block valves (root valves) to the
instrument shall be pre-insulated steam or hot fluid heated 1/2" (14mm) outside
diameter (O.D.) seamless, .049" (1.2mm) wall thickness tubing with 3/8" (12mm)
outside diameter (O.D.) seamless, .049" (1.2mm) wall thickness heating tube. It shall
be used for “Heavy Trace” where heating tube is in contact with instrument process
impulse line to maintain its temperature up to 400°F (204°C). Adequate tracer tube
shall be provided to trace primary block valves (root valves). An instrument
enclosure or wrap on transmitter shall be considered.

J. Instruments with freeze points above 41°F (5°C) shall be provided with insulated
enclosures and heaters.

K. Isolation block valves shall be provided by piping for each steam tracer supply and
return at the supply manifold or header and at the return manifold or header.

L. A separate steam trap or controller shall be provided for each individual steam traced
instrument.

M. Refer to Heat Tracing Design Specification, MQ-SP-P-6012, for electric tracing


applications.

5.0 DRAWING PROCEDURES

5.1 GENERAL

A. Instrument Installation Drawings shall be in sufficient detail to show instrument


location, orientation, support, piping arrangement and components.

B. Field instrument locations and orientation are shown on the Instrument Location Plan
drawings. All instruments, except minor components of an instrument system, will
be shown. These drawings will include structures, equipment, foundations, racks and
any other items required to locate the instruments.

C. Separate Instrument Installation Assemblies will be prepared for Process Tubing,


Pneumatic Tubing/Piping, Mounting-Support, and Instrument Electrical (wire/cable).

D. The number of assembly drawings required in each of the above categories will be
determined during Detail Design, which defines instrument make, model, material
class, process conditions, configuration and client preferences. Typical assembly
drawings will be prepared and used for as many installations as practical.

E. The Design Instrument Index will be used to correlate these drawings with the proper
instrument tag.

5.2 INSTRUMENT INSTALLATION DETAIL DRAWINGS

A. Typical process instrument installation detail drawings shall be prepared for the
following categories; Instrument Installation Standard Reference, and Flow, Level,
Pressure, Temperature, and Analyzer Instrument Installations, and shall be of
sufficient detail to define the connections, components, and construction materials
required.

B. The drawings shall be of sufficient detail to define the instrument orientation, piping
and tubing configuration, connections, components, and materials required.

C. Instrument support fabrication detail drawings shall be of sufficient detail to define


materials and allow fabrication by either a shop fabricator or a job-site construction
contractor.

D. Typical installation detail drawings shall be prepared to accommodate as many field


installations as possible for that specific instrument type.

E. Instrument installation detail drawings may be isometric, diagrammatic, or


orthographic in presentation.

F. Instrument installation detail drawing symbols are defined in Instrument Installation


Standard Reference drawings.

G. Additional installation assemblies and drawings will be prepared as required by the


detailed engineering and design phase of the project.

H. If applicable, heat tracing shall be provided to ensure proper instrument operation at


low ambient temperatures. See Heat tracing Installation Details and General Notes.
