The Christmas of A Lifetime - Visit To Divyakarunya Ashram
"Christmas is most truly Christmas when we celebrate it by giving the light of love to those who
need it the most."
Most of us would have experienced the dilemma of choosing an appropriate gift for
someone. What would be the best gift that you could ever give to someone? Could it be
something tangible such as accessories or something more precious such as time, or perhaps,
love?
We, the first-year students of the Department of Psychology, decided to celebrate our
first Christmas at Prajyothi Nikethan, with the children and other residents of Divya Karunya
Ashram, Kalletumkara. It was a decision that we made as a part of community service and all the
needed encouragement and support was given to us, by our class teacher, Dr. Jaya A.T.
On the morning of 14th December 2019, all of us gathered in the Ashram with our class
teacher. We were given a warm welcome by the director of the Ashram- Mr. K.L. Jacob. He
briefed us about the Ashram and the residents there. He spoke about the situations of the
children, who were 50 or so in number, before coming to the Ashram and it opened our eyes to
see and realize that there are people who need love and security. It was really eye-opening to
realize that we have been blessed with many provisions and opportunities in life, so that we may
share them with the others whom, God has placed around us. Later, the children came, we met
them, and cut the Christmas cake, of which, we had our shares. We also met the elderly living in
the Ashram.
Then, we engaged in exciting games during which we got to know and experience the joy
and happiness of innocence and childhood. Following this, a few children of the Ashram sang
songs and surprised us with their God-given talents. Then we could no longer contain the
excitement to give the gifts that we had bought for them and all the children were happy and
couldn't wait to open their gifts. All of us danced, sang and had fun with the children, and it was
indeed, the Christmas of a lifetime for all of us. We left the Ashram with a tinge of sadness
mixed with the joy of having been able to live a day fulfilling, at least in part, the purpose of our
lives. And our Christmas gifts were the smiles and happiness that our friends from the Ashram
gave us, wrapped with innocence, which left us joyful as ever.
Christmas marks the birth of Jesus Christ, the savior of the world, who came to give life
and light by sacrificing his own life. We understand the purpose of our lives only when we do
the same, by giving some of the precious things that we treasure, to others. It may be our time,
love, life, or maybe a small act of kindness or even a smile.
We are here on Earth not just to feel loved but to love, not just to receive but to give. And
we glow with life only when we burn within.
