Dedicated Short-Range Communication
Dedicated Short-Range Communication
car industry. We will go through the CV2X (Cellular vehicle to everything) technology and the DSRC
(Dedicated Short-Range Communication) technology, where we will go through each technique to
understand it and to make a comparison between these two technologies and see the impact of
each one of them on the automotive industry now and in the future. By reviewing and studying
many research resources from telecommunication companies and from automotive companies we
will have a full understanding of the features of each one of these protocols and which one of them
will be more effective in the autonomous driving, and we have to mention that this topic is one of
the most important ones in the modern communication technologies and it took a great interest
after developing the 5G technology.
I. INTRODUCTION:
The autonomous industry became one of the most important technology fields in the world, and
many companies are investing a lot of effort and resources in this part of the automotive industry.
Today we have a lot of research based on the concept of connecting the vehicle to other vehicles or
other infrastructure on the roads, and developing a technology that is giving vehicles the ability to
be connected to the outside world became very essential and basic. For example, Ford motor
company had a plan to connect 100% of its vehicles to the network in North America for the year
2019, and for the year 2020 the plan is to connect 90% of the vehicles to the networks for the rest of
the world. Concurrently, many companies in the US, Europe and Asia are taking faster steps to
shape the future of the connected vehicles.
The idea of connecting a vehicle to an infrastructure is not something new, as there are several
companies who were considered pioneers in this field. The beginnings were concerned about
connecting the cars with the cameras on the highways or with the gates and toll roads that charge
the cars automatically, in addition to other types of technologies that were developed many years
ago.
Today, the need arose to develop a technology that helps cars to communicate with each other and
also to communicate with other facilities on the road. DSRC (Dedicated Short-Range
Communication) technology is a two-way communication standard that has a short-to-medium
range. It permits high rate data transmission, which is a crucial requirement for active safety
applications, and it’s also referred to as IEEE 802.11P which is the standard followed for V2V and V2I
communication. This technology is commonly known as DSRC (in the United States) and ITS-G5 (in
Europe).
On the other hand, CV2X (Cellular Vehicle to everything) has been used as a generic term, which
consists of multiple components: V2V (vehicle), V2I (Infrastructure/ RSU), V2P (Pedestrian), and V2N
(Cellular Network), where the first version of Cellular V2X (vehicle to everything) has been released
in 3GPP as part of Rel. 14.
In the upcoming sections of this project, we will discuss the concepts of each one of these
technologies, and then we will compare them both to understand the major differences between
them.
For the rest of this paper, we will study the concepts of DSRC and CV2X in section II. Section III will
illustrate the differences between these two technologies, and in section IV we will see general
comparisons between DSRC and CV2X from some companies’ point of view. Section V will have the
conclusion of the project.
