EXAMINATIONS FOR DEGREES AND DIPLOMAS

October–November 2010

KNE312 Structural Mechanics

First and Only Paper

Examiner: Dr DS Holloway

Time Allowed: THREE (3) HOURS

Instructions:

Attempt any FOUR (4) questions. Each question is worth 20 marks. A

total of 80 marks constitutes full marks. Useful formulae are included at the
end of the exam paper. To obtain full marks the sign and plotting conventions
for intenal force diagrams used in lectures must be observed.

Question 1 (20 marks)

Analyse the frame shown in Figure 1 using the Force Method with bending
moments at some or all of the supports as your redundant forces (i.e. create
your primary structure by introducing hinges in the beam at appropriate
supports). Plot diagrams for M and V , indicating magnitudes at all signif-
icant points. Neglect the effect of shear and axial forces on the structural
deformations. The bending stiffness EI is constant everywhere.

Question 2 (20 marks)

Use the Slope-Deflection Method to analyse the frame shown in Figure 2.
Plot diagrams for M and V , indicating magnitudes of all significant points.
Bending stiffnesses are as indicated. Note that member AC can translate
horizontally.

Question 3 (20 marks)

Use the Moment Distribution Method to analyse the frame shown in Figure 3.
Plot the diagrams for M and V , indicating magnitudes of all significant
points. Bending stiffnesses of members are indicated.

Question 5 (20 marks)

Answer both parts of this question.
a Figure 5 shows an element in a state of plane stress. Calculate the cor-
responding principal stresses and their associated directions and sketch
an element in its correct orientation showing the principal stresses.
[8 marks]
b Analyse the four possible plastic collapse mechanisms for the structure
shown in Figure 6. If the plastic moment capacity for all members
is Mp = 72 kNm determine what multiple of the specified loads will
cause collapse by each of the four mechanisms analysed, hence specify
the overall factor of safety. Draw the bending moment diagram for the
true collapse mechanism. All members have the same plastic moment
capacity. [12 marks]
