My Why?

Why am I in AVID? There’s a simple answer to this: I am in AVID because I want to

succeed. Success is based on the principles of knowledge, hard work, and perseverance. But how

exactly can I achieve success? Success can be achieved in a multitude of ways, but attending

college will ensure a prosperous future. Fortunately, AVID prepares students for college; AVID

has taught me and will continue to teach me how to manage my time well, how to communicate

well with others, and how to take control of my future. These skills have allowed me to be

successful in high school and I’m sure they will be just as helpful in college.

Now, you may also ask “why do you want to go to college?” I want to go to college to

get a good-paying job. A job that will not only pay my bills but one that will allow me to live a

good life and provide a decent pay so I can give back to my family and my community.

Nonetheless, choosing a career is also very important and there are several aspects to keep in

mind. A career should not be chosen solely based on income, but through a combination of

personal interests, skills, and the type of life you want to live. I find myself to be very

comfortable with public speaking and debating and as mentioned before, I want to be able to

give back to my family, so I have decided to become a Civil Rights Attorney. This occupation

will allow me to speak out against injustices, defend the basic rights of all people, and possibly

make a change in someone’s life. I will defend victims of discrimination, harassment, hate

crimes, police misconduct and brutality, unlawful arrests, racial profiling, etc. I hope to instill a

feeling of reassurance to those who are afraid to take legal action against injustices brought upon

them.

To become successful in the field of law, you must have great interpersonal skills and

public speaking skills, but obtaining a degree or a career is not easy. I am aware that I will face

challenges and struggles along the way. I know that there will be moments where giving up may

seem like the solution; however, something that is worthwhile will never be easy to accomplish.

I am willing to do what it takes to reach my goals and I will not let anyone or anything get in the

way of my hopes and dreams because staying motivated can bring positive change to my life and

those around me.
