What is a Morpheme? Draw the Chart of the types of Morphemes.
Morpheme (Definition)
“A minimal unit of meaning or grammatical function is called Morpheme.”
For Example
Replay Reaction
English word forms such as replay and reaction must consist of one element in the above
mentioned example such as re.
Units of grammatical function include forms used to indicate past tense or plural.
For Instance
In the sentence The Police reopened the Investigation, the word reopened consists of
three (03) morphemes. One minimal unit of meaning is open, another minimal unit of meaning is
re- (meaning “again”) and a minimal unit of grammatical function is –ed (indicating past tense).
Types of Morphemes
There are 02 Types of Morphemes
1. Free Morpheme
Free Morphemes can stand in isolation and independently.
For example: Pen, Watch, Open, Tour and Chair etc.
2. Bound Morpheme
Bound Morphemes cannot stand in isolation and dependent on others.
For example: of, -ing, over, -ist, -ed and -re etc.
Types of Free Morpheme
There are 02 Types of Free Morphemes
1. Lexical Morpheme
Lexical morphemes are those that having meaning by themselves.
For example: Nouns (girl, man), Adjectives (sad), Verbs (follow)
2. Functional Morpheme
Functional morphemes specify a relationship between other morphemes.
For example: Conjunctions (but), Preposition (of), Article (the)
Types of Bound Morpheme
There are 02 Types of Bound Morphemes
1. Derivational Morpheme
Derivational morpheme changes the grammatical behaviour of the word.
In other words, where the class changes e.g. adjective (good) to noun (goodness)
or noun (fool) to adjective (foolish)
2. Inflectional Morpheme
Inflectional morpheme cannot change the grammatical behaviour of the word.
English has only eight (08) inflectional morphemes.
