MUX and DEMUX

A multiplexer is a device that has multiple inputs and a single line output. It selects one of several input lines to connect to its output line, as determined by a select line. Multiplexers are used in communication systems, computer memory, telephone networks, and transmitting data from satellites to increase efficiency and reduce transmission lines. A demultiplexer is the reverse, taking a single input line and routing it to one of multiple output lines based on a select line. They are used in communication receivers, computer arithmetic logic units, and converting serial to parallel data.

WHAT IS MULTIPLEXER???

➢ Multiplexer is adevicethat hasmultiple

inputs and asingle line output.
➢ The select lines determine which input is
connected to output and also to increase
the amount of datathat canbe sentover a
network with certain time.
➢ It is called as dataselector.
MULTIPLEXER TYPES
1. 2-1 Multiplexer(1selectline)
2. 4-1 Multiplexer(2selectline)
3. 8-1 Multiplexer(3selectline)
4. 16-1 Multiplexer(4selectline)
4 to 1multiplexer
APPLICATIONS OF MULTIPLEXER

❑ Communication System:
❖ Acommunication systemhasa great impact by
multiplexer.
❖ By using amultiplexer, the efficiency canbe
increased.
❑ ComputerMemory:
❖ Multiplexers are usedin computer memory.
❖ Reduces copper lines to connect the memory
to other parts of the computer.
APPLICATIONS OF MULTIPLEXER

❑TelephoneNetwork:
❖ In telephone networks, multipleaudio
signals areintegrated.

❑Transmission from theComputer

of a Satellite:
❖ Multiplexer is usedto transmit the
data signals.
❖ From satellite to ground
❖ By usingGSM satellite.
WHAT IS DEMULTIPLEXER???

❑ De-multiplexer is also a device with one

input andmultiple output lines.
It is used to send a signal to one of the
many devices. The main difference
between a multiplexer and a de-
multiplexer isthat a multiplexer takes
two or more signals and encodes them on
a wire, whereas a de- multiplexer does
reverse to what the multiplexer does.
TYPES OF DEMULTIPLEXER

❑De-multiplexers are classifiedinto

four types:
❖ 1-2 demultiplexer(1 select line)
❖ 1-4 demultiplexer(2 select lines)
❖ 1-8 demultiplexer(3 select lines)
❖ 1-16 demultiplexer (4 select lines)
1-4 DEMULTIPLEXER

Truth Table
APPLICATIONS OF DEMULTIPLEXER

❑Communication System :
❖ DE multiplexer receives signal outputs from the
multiplexer.
❖ At the receiver end it converts them backto the
original form.
❑ ArithmeticLogicUnit (ALU) :
❖ The output of the ALUis fed asan input to the DE
multiplexer.
❖ And the output of the DE multiplexer is
connected to a multiple register.
APPLICATIONS OF DEMULTIPLEXER

❑Seriestoparallelconverter:
❖ This converter is used to
reconstruct parallel data.
❖ Serial data is given as an
input to the DE
multiplexer at a regular
interval.
❖ A counter is attached
to detect the data
signal.
