A project to create a Center of Integrative/holistic Psychiatry

1) Description of the idea: This proposal is to create a Centre of Integrative/holistic or holistic psychiatry,
for treatment of patients with mental symptoms, using homeopathy as preferential medicine and eventually
with CAMs. Treatment may be ambulatory, with option of hospitalization. Working as a team has a wide
range of available therapeutic resources. It is possible to integrate all those practices and conduct both inter
and transdisciplinary approaches because this model does not present too much difficulty to be integrated
as it happens with other models. According to the case it works prescribing pharmacology and CAMs also.
Treatment has a high degree of individualization.
2) Human resources needed: The Center is integrated by health professionals of several specialities
(physicians, neurologists, psychologists and others) and duly certified CAM practitioners. Other health
workers are nurses, art therapists, chiropractors, security personal, cleaning, waste collectors and all those
who make up the hard core staff of health institutions and hospitals. It takes into account the colors, the
design of the rooms and the presence of objects of art and music in architectural spaces and decoration
because of its influence on moods. It also takes into account the nutritional needs of patients based on
diagnosis of traditional Chinese medicine. Disciplines that can be planned or chosen together with patients
are: eurhythmics, yoga, massages therapy, acupuncture, neural therapy, cranial sacral therapy,
psychotherapy through art.
3) Value Proposition: There are many centers that work in integrative medicine or integrative psychiatry
as described, but there are no institutions that use homeopathy as initial treatment without hospitalization,
except when it is absolutely essential in many cases either in brief or prolonged manner. The choice of
homeopathic treatment as preferential is based on the fact that it can be helped by the pharmacological one;
it is non-invasive and may be more acceptable to patients with mental symptoms. Moreover, it is easier to
manage and allows to improve cases and is open towards other possibilities and therapeutic resources.
4) Objectives: To conduct an effective treatment reduces the degree of relapse, the amount of drug
medication, even avoiding their indication, which increases patients awareness of their problem (insight)
and the one of their families, increases chances of stabilization, continuity of treatment and improves their
quality of life .This is achieved through the implementation of a treatment in a therapeutic harmonic
environment that could integrate all possible therapeutic resources.
5) Summary of work modality: From the beginning, the treatment is performed by a team work, seminars
about cases and their supervision. Therapeutic tools are used as necessary, in compliance of the singularity
of the case.
Team meetings are held regularly and include, in successive stages all those that are in contact with the
patient. Team meetings also serve to determine what limitations and obstacles has a case and establish a
prognosis after a defined time elapsed within the Institution. Patients are admitted through scheduled
admissions or emergency, through the on duty Service. They can stay temporarily hospitalized or it can be
decided for a longer stay. Data of recorded cases are entered in the database of the Centre and may be used
to undertake investigations and research. The Centre also carries out activities of training, teaching and
dissemination.
6) Major groups of diseases treated at the Center: Affective disorders, anxiety disorders, and psychotic
disorders. (Also autism in children)
Conditions and diseases that can be treated in specialized areas: Addictions with co-occurring disorders
(including alcoholism), cognitive dysfunction, memory loss and learning disorders, older people with
Alzheimer. adults and children with attention deficit, hyperactivity and learning disorders .Insomnia and
sleep disorders ADHD.
