Time: 2 hours
Full Marks: 45 / Pass Marks: 22.5

Attempt all questions.

1. Discuss the solution of Schrodinger equation when particles are scattered from the unknown potential
which is spherical. Use perturbation method to solve it. Find Green function of the operator (∇2 + k 2 )
and evaluate it for scattering and hence discuss Born approximation. [10]
OR
What do you mean by magnetic moment of sub-atomic particles? Find the magnetic moments of u, d
and s quarks and show that the magnetic moment of the proton is

where symbols carry their usual meaning.

2. Show that quantum theory of scattering [10]

𝑒
𝜓(𝑥) ~ 𝑒 𝑖𝑘𝑧 + 𝑓(𝜃)
𝑟
should be modified to
𝑖[𝑘𝑧+𝐵 ln𝑘(𝑟−𝑧)]
𝑒 𝑖[𝑘𝑟−𝐵 ln𝑘𝑟]
𝜓(𝑟)~ [ 𝑒 + 𝑓(𝜃) ]
𝑟
for two-to-two Coulomb scattering. Find expression for Mott formula and discuss oscillating term.

3. Plot Feynman diagram for Higgs boson production and explain it. [5]
OR
Consider the general case of a reaction A + B  A + B mediated by the exchange of a particle X. With
the reference of Feynman diagram and conservation laws, obtain the range of interaction over which X
can propagate before being absorbed by B.

4. What do you mean by neutrino oscillation? Derive an expression for the probability of neutrino mixing
and oscillation. [5]

5. Discuss scattering by spherical potential barrier and show that the cross-section is four times the
classical result. [5]

6. Use Born formula to find scattering amplitude and total cross-section for square well potential [5]

7. Draw a lowest- order Feynman diagram at the quark level for the following decays: [5]
a) Λ  p + e-+ ѵ̅e
b) n  p + e-+ ѵ̅e
