S O: V G: - About Me

Sophia St. Clair is a hospitality student at PRINT studying meetings and events with an expected graduation in Spring 2022. Her dream career is to plan major fashion-focused events worldwide while continuing to pursue writing. By graduation, she aims to shadow an event planner abroad. She recognizes areas for improvement such as speaking up more in discussions and being more engaged. While self-aware, she has learned not to be too critical of herself and to better advertise her strengths. Her goals are to network more widely, attend industry events, and maintain a contact spreadsheet.

About Me

My PRINT 8-3

The Ideal Hospitality Leader

In my mind, a leader in the hospitality industry is flexible and constantly bringing

new ideas into their work. This industry is so unique because it is an experience
economy, and as leaders we need to create lasting memories for our clients. My
view of leadership has changed to include a much more creative element, rather
than a manager with a high level of power. I envision a leader to excel in self
savvy and people savvy competencies over the skills associated with business
savvy. I would like to be the type of leader who introduces new concepts to the
industry and facilitates a work environment that inspires others.

Career Goals

Based on what you know about your values, passions, and talents, what would
be your dream career in the long term?

In the long term, my dream career and lifestyle will incorporate several different
passions of mine. I have realized that cultivating my strengths and interests has
allowed me to grow those skills into things I feel truly passionate about. It is
important for me to be able to have variety in my work and life because that is
how I stay inspired and feel the drive to create. Ultimately, a dream career for me
is one that continues to evolve throughout my life and allows me to travel, but my
major focus will be global event planning. I want my two other passions, fashion
and writing, to be a part of my career as well. My dream would be to plan major
fashion-focused events worldwide, while continuing to pursue my writing
throughout my career whether that means writing within the events industry or
through creative outlets.

1
What would be an ideal position/career/life choice for you 5 years after
graduating?

I hope to be working as an event manager for a designer fashion label in New

York, in a company that allows me to travel internationally.

List a short-term career goal – achieved by your graduation date.

By my graduation in two years I would like to achieve the goal of working with or
even shadowing an event planner abroad. I will be in Barcelona studying abroad
next spring, so this is an ideal time to find that opportunity through my
networking. Although I cannot be employed abroad, I think it would be a very
valuable experience for me to witness how an event takes place within another
culture, since that is the environment, I want to plan events in.

Other Goals

Identify 3 goals for your college journey.

1. I will take advantage of the HTM network while I am still a student and get to
know students outside my emphasis.
2. I will attend one or more events conventions (IMEX, WEC).
3. I will keep a spreadsheet of my hospitality contacts, so I can stay well
connected to the people I have met and refer to that for help as I begin my
career.

SECTION TWO: REFLECTIONS

________________________________________________________________

Simulations

According to my proctor, my strengths during the simulations were keeping the

group on track, checking on our notetaker, and implementing creative ideas. My
weaknesses, according to her and my group members through the 360
assignment, were mainly not speaking up enough and being more engaged
throughout discussion. These weaknesses were definitely ideas I am aware of,
and I do feel they were even amplified by the virtual platform and my limited
experience with it. Although we did not have a second simulation, I have focused
on improving those aspects of my virtual communication through the rest of this
semester.

2
My Perception and the Perceptions of Others

One significant lesson I learned this semester was that I need to be more
confident in my own strengths. All though it is healthy to be self-analytical, my
results showed that I rated myself much lower in many areas compared to my
peers. I have learned that being too critical is important to be cautious of because
it will prevent me from being able to advertise my own strengths as an asset. In
the future, I will continue to be self-aware, but less harsh on myself in many
aspects.

Title: Maintain A Personal Budget

Background: Using Excel to maintain my own finances throughout the

semester will help me to become more confident with my accounting skills and
budget formats. Budgets are a crucial deliverable for event planners, and this
project will allow me to practice with real-life applications. Having a budget will
also help me increase my awareness and accountability of my own saving and
spending. This is an important habit for me to develop as I begin my career and
become financially independent. More importantly, this will force me to
consistently work with numbers, which is something I no longer get in my
required coursework.

6
Description: This project will involve five major phases. First, setting my
personal goals for spending and earning throughout the semester and per month.
Next, I will outline how I expect to meet these goals and calculate my projected
account balances. In the third phase I will record and update my actual budget
with spending and earnings each month. Finally, I will compare my projected
budget with my ending actual budget and analyze how my behaviors affected the
budget.

Success Indicators: The main objective of the project is for me to develop and
maintain an accurate budget with formatting and calculations. The desired
outcome would be for me to also meet my personal financial goals. In the end, I
will know if the project has been successful if I have a completed budget and I
feel more confident in the process of completing a budget.
