Assignment I

1. Contrast effectiveness and efficiency? Give an example of a time when an organisation was
effective but not efficient, efficient but not effective, both efficient and effective, and neither
efficient nor effective.

2. What are the four basic activities that comprise the management process? How they are related
to one another? Explain your answer with a suitable example.

3. Recall a recent group project or task in which you have participated. Explain how members of
the group displayed each of the management skills.

4. Choose an organisation of your choice and locate the top, middle, and first-line managers on
the organisation chart. What are some of the job titles held by persons at each level?

5. Young, innovative, or high-tech firms often adopt the strategy of ignoring the history or
attempting to do something radically new. In what ways this strategy help them? In what ways
might this strategy hinder them?

6. Elements from the general environment affect all organisations, but they may not affect all
organisations in the same way. Choose an industry of your choice and discuss the impact of at
least two different elements from the general environment on firms in that industry. Are all
firms affected equally? Explain.

7. Consider an organisation with which you are familiar. Outline its environments in detail and
provide specific examples to illustrate how each dimension affects your organisation.

8. In the systems approach to management, identify the inputs from the external environment;
explain how they are transformed through the management functions to produce the outputs to
the external environments. Why is the communication with the external environment
important?

9. Keep a log of your activities throughout a week and categorize the activities into the generic
managerial functions of planning, organizing, leading and controlling. Does this evidence
support the universality of management? If yes, explain how?

10. How in your opinion will technology affect and change management practices in future and
what will remain unchanged?
11. What is the major difference between authority and power? Can a manger delegate his/her
responsibilities? Give an example in support of your answer.

12. Why would Indian management thought have had to wait so long for its recognition and why
is there is limited mention of it in most of the books on management?

13. What are the central components that characterize the new workplace? What are some newer
issues that managers today confront?

14. Discuss the science and the art of management with suitable examples. Describe how people
become managers, and summarize the scope of management in organizations.

15. Recall an interaction you have had with a superior (manager, teacher, group leader). In that
interaction, how did the superior use science? If he/she did not use science, what could have
been done to use science? In that communication, how did the superior use art? If he/she did
not use art, what could have been done to use art?
