Demonstrating Important Governance Gaps That Impact The Management of Forest Lands

The document describes three environmental programs in Brazil: 1) The Urban Environmental Volunteer Program in Brazil focuses on cultural exchange between volunteers and local communities to generate long-term benefits for both. Community-run projects provide volunteers with experience while helping the local economy. 2) GFI in Brazil works to strengthen land use laws and practices in Mato Grosso and Pará states through demonstrating governance gaps, participating in REDD+ processes, and assessing challenges in zoning laws. 3) The Pilot Program to Conserve the Brazilian Rainforest established protected areas and surveillance systems while funding research and sustainable development projects for communities, supporting over 30,000 families.

Environmental programs

 Brazil: Urban Environmental Volunteer Program

-The core belief of this organisation centres on the idea of cultural exchange
between you as a volunteer and the local community and the long-term benefits this can
bring for both sides. These projects are community-run by local people who know the city
intimately and understand its needs. This program provides an excellent opportunity for you
to gain valuable knowledge and experience while at the same time helping to generate
income and employment opportunities in the community.

 GFI in Brazil

- GFI in Brazil works to identify and address key governance challenges to

strengthen land use laws and practices, particularly in the States of Mato Grosso and Pará.
GFI partners encourage greater accountability and transparency in forest governance by:

 Demonstrating important governance gaps that impact the management of forest

lands,
 Participating in REDD+ processes in Mato Grosso, Pará, and at the national
level.
 Assessing the participation challenges in the development of the Mato Grosso
state zoning law.

In addition, GFI Brazil has participated in and produced research to support the implementation
of other major policies to reduce deforestation.

 Pilot Program to Conserve the Brazilian Rainforest

-The program – initially founded with US$ 428 million – was structured around
four components that originated 28 projects. First and foremost, the creation of a much
needed natural resources policy.

Secondly, conservation and natural resources management protected areas

were established to enforce regulation over local land use.

Around 2.1 million hectares of extractive reserves were delimited accordingly,

and a surveillance system warned about deforestation and degradation in the nine
Amazon states.
PPG7 also comprised a science and technology component which funded
Brazilian research institutes, as well as 110 studies about the rainforest ecosystems.

The fourth component encouraged innovative projects to promote sustainable

development in Amazonian communities. As a result, concrete support was given to
30,000 families and 70,000 producers.
