A. Brief Overview of Course


This is an introductory course to computer application packages. It does
not require a prior knowledge of the packages; however, the students are
familiar with the office environment as the fundamentals have been taught
in the previous semester. The course is designed to expose students to
current state-of the- art of office automation. The course goal is to teach
library use, data management and analysis, problem solving and critical
thinking skills using Microsoft office.

B. Course Objectives/Goals
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
• Analyze data,
• Manage and manipulate with MS tools data
• Solve problems in a scientific or analysis-oriented context.
• Present the result of analysis, using the MS-office tools.
• Make good use of the Library and its resources

Module 1: SPREADSHEET

Week 1:
Introduction: Spreadsheet, Access, PowerPoint and Use of Library

Week 2:
Introduction, Microsoft excel, Creating workbooks and worksheets,
editing a worksheet, formatting a worksheet and creating series,
Copying, moving and saving worksheets. Excel Functions.

Week 3:
Tables and Advanced excel functions(), Creating custom numbers
format, format styles and alignments, inserting hyperlinks,
Spellchecking,Creating custom views, Creating charts and graphs,
Worksheet protection, Printing the worksheet.

Module 2: DATABASE MANAGEMENT


Week 4:
Introduction, Microsoft Access, Creating databases using database
wizard and other methods, Tables: Types, Functions, Properties,
Creating Tables, Table validation and sorting.

Week 5:
Types of join, Creating joins, types and how to create relationships,
Types of queries. Creating advance queries, Data retrieval.

Week 6:
Forms: Types, functions, properties and creating forms and form
navigation. Reports: Types, functions, properties and creating reports,

Introduction, Creating presentations, Inserting pictures, sounds and clip
arts, creating visual effects, Inserting and deleting slides. Duplicating

Introduction , definition of conservation and preservation, causes of
deterioration of library materials, Importance of conservation and
preservation

Week 12
Introduction, definition of listening, common listening problems,
strategies for effective listening, definition of note-making, techniques
of note-making, Importance of note-making

Week 13
The Internet and its uses, Search Engines, Online databases, Basic
Internet search skills, Mastery of CLR online databases.

E. Structure of the Programme/Method of Grading

(1) Continuous assessment 30 marks


(i) Class Test/Assignment 15%
(ii) Mid Semester Exam 15%

F. Ground Rules & Regulations
o To seat for the examination, 75% Attendance is required.
o Attendance is strongly recommended for each student, as those
who attend classes do well in exams. Any student who is going to
be absent must do so with good reasons supported by evidences.
o Students should display a good sense of responsibility and
decorum
o Class assignment must be taken seriously
o Students engaged actively in all class activities
o Students are expected to be punctual for all classes.

G. Assignments/Class Work
There will be at least one homework assignment every two weeks which
will be practical. The Students are expected to demonstrate their

understanding and knowledge of the topics taught in class. Late
submissions have penalties.

H. Alignment with Covenant University Vision/Goals


In today’s competitive world, having the advantage of literacy of computer
applications is a vital key to having an edge in the industry. The students
are equipped with knowledge and skills to use a spreadsheet application
(MS Excel), a database management application (MS Access) and a
presentation application (MS PowerPoint). They are also exposed to the
use of library and study skills which will enhance their capacity rating
preparing them for the industry.
