Big Picture

What is Velocity?
It is important that you understand that meaning of three key words related to movement.
1. Magnitude – Means the SIZE of a certain quantity.
2. Speed – Measured in m/s, only has magnitude, tells you nothing about direction. E.g. 5m/s
3. VELOCITY – Measured in m/s has both magnitude and a direction. E.g. 5m/s to the right.
From now on always use the term velocity rather than speed.

What is Acceleration?
When the velocity of an object changes we say it is accelerating. Acceleration is the amount an objects
velocity changes by in a second, or, meters per second per second. The best definition is “rate of change of
velocity”. Its unit is m/s2.

A big change in velocity over a short time will give a big acceleration.
The same change in velocity over a long time will give a small acceleration.
There are several equations that can be used to calculate acceleration, they all mean the same thing.

⁄ ! $ % & ' % %&(

" # " #

a is the acceleration in metres per second squared, m/s2

v is the final velocity in metres per second, m/s
u is the starting velocity in metres per second, m/s
t is the time taken in seconds, s

Examples
1. An archer fires an arrow from his longbow, after 0.4s it has a velocity of 40m/s.
)*+*
What is the acceleration? 100 / 0
*.)
2. A diver belly flops into a swimming pool, his velocity changes from 20m/s to 0m/s in 0.5s. What was
*+0*
his acceleration? &40 / 0
*.1
(Notice the acceleration is negative is this case, meaning a deceleration)

3. A rock climber falls off a rock face. The acceleration due to gravity is 9.8m/s2. What is his velocity after
2.5s? (First rearrange, then solve the equation for v)

! %
3 % 9.8 6 2.5 24.5 /
When practicing questions find out which version of the equation works best for you.

Stretch and Challenge

Explain the difference between distance and displacement.
Explain the difference between a scalar and a vector.
What is the fastest you could ever go? Why? How long would it take to reach that speed in a car? (If it was
really possible!)

Motion Graphs
The learning outcomes of this lesson are to be able to…
C1: Extract information from distance-time graphs and velocity-time graphs, explain the significance of the
gradients of each kind of graph, explain the area under the graph and calculate it.
C2: Construct motion graphs when given written or numerical information, calculate the gradient of the
lines.
S: Suggest problems with distance-time graphs with non-uniform velocity and velocity-time graphs with
non-uniform acceleration and propose solutions for finding the gradients.
