Question 17:
Theoretically, a contagious disease spread at a rate directly proportional to the product of the
number of the population infected and the remaining population that is not populated. To test this
theory, five mice in a stable population of 500 are intentionally infected with a contagious disease.
Assuming the theory is correct and it is observed that 90% of the population are free from the
disease after two hours. Let x be the number of mice infected with the disease at time t.

Question 18:
A fungus is spreading on the surface of a wall. A biologist proposes a model for the rate at which
the fungus is spreading on the wall. The total surface area of the wall is 9 m2. The surface area that
is affected at time t hours is x m2. The biologist proposes that the rate of change of x is proportional
to the product of the surface area that is affected and the surface area that is unaffected. Write
