Revision: Standard Solution & Acid and Base

This document contains a summary of standard solutions and acid-base reactions: 1) A sample problem is given to calculate the volume of water needed to prepare a 1.0 N H2SO4 solution based on the amount of acid remaining from a titration. 2) Key acids and bases are classified as stronger or weaker. 3) The ionization of ions in water is explained, and solutions of KHSO4 and KC6H5COO are identified as acidic or basic. 4) An example calculation is shown for determining the % ionization and H+ concentration of a 0.10 M HF solution given its ionization constant.

Revision: Standard Solution & Acid and Base

1. A sample of Na2CO3 weighting 1.50 g required 25.0 mL of a H2SO4 solution for

titration to the methyl orange end point. If 980 mL of H2SO4 remain, calculate the

volume of water in mL to prepare 1.0 N.

2. Classify each of the following compounds as a stronger acid or base.

(a) HClO or HClO3

(b) HCl or CH3COOH

(c) NaOH or CH3NH2

3. Write an equation for the reaction of any ion with water. Determine whether
aqueous solutions of the following are acidic, basic or neutral. Provide your
answer.
(a) Potassium hydrogen sulphate (KHSO4)
(b) Potassium benzoate (C6H5COOK)
4. Calculate the %ionization and H+ ion concentration in M in a solution containing
0.10 M hydrofluoric acid (HF). Given the HF ionization constant at 25oC is 2.25
× 10-5.
Solutions

1. A sample of Na2CO3 weighting 1.50 g required 25.0 mL of a H2SO4 solution for

titration to the methyl orange end point. If 980 mL of H2SO4 remain, calculate the

volume of water in mL to prepare 1.0 N.

Solution:

Equivalent weight of salt = molecular weight of salt/charge present on ionic form

The salt Na2CO3 ionizes to form 2Na+ and CO3(2–). So, the charge present on both

ions is 2.

Equivalent weight of Na2CO3 = 106 /2 = 53 g/eq

2. Classify each of the following compounds as a stronger acid or base.

Solution:

(a) HClO or HClO3

(b) HCl or CH3COOH

(c) NaOH or CH3NH2

3. Write an equation for the reaction of any ion with water. Determine whether
aqueous solutions of the following are acidic, basic or neutral. Provide your answer.
(a) Potassium hydrogen sulphate (KHSO4)
(b) Potassium benzoate (C6H5COOK)
Solution:

(a) HSO4- + H2O ↔ SO4- + H3O+ (Acidic)

Reason: The ions are K+ and HSO4-. K+ is the cation of the strong KOH and
does not react with water. The HSO4- ion is from the diprotic sulfuric acid, so
it reacts with water to produce H3O+.

(b) C6H5COO- + H2O ↔ C6H5COOH + OH- (Basic)

Reason: The ions are K+ and C6H5COO-. K+ is the cation of the strong base
KOH and does not react with water. The benzoate ion, C6H5COO- is from the
weak acid, benzoate acid, so it reacts with water to produce OH- ion:

4. Calculate the %ionization and H+ ion concentration in M in a solution containing

0.10 M hydrofluoric acid (HF). Given the HF ionization constant at 25oC is 2.25
× 10-5.
