EDUC 2220- Educational Technology Lesson Plan

Weather and Our Four Seasons

Kameron Quimba
Kindergarten

Common Core Standards:

Social and Emotional Development

Approaches Toward Learning
Language and Literacy Development
Cognition and General Knowledge

Lesson Summary:

Children have already experienced different types of weather throughout their whole lives. Whether it’s
playing in the rain, building a snowman, swimming under the hot sun, or wearing a big heavy jacket against
the cold, they have experienced whether without really thinking too much about it. In this lesson, children will
use their prior experiences to learn about weather. They will have hands on activities, videos to watch and the
teacher will read them a book about weather. Together as a class, they will fill out a chart on what our favorite
activities in different weather scenarios are.

Estimated Duration:

This lesson will take about 135 minutes. The teacher will break up this lesson into 3 days, each lesson being
about 45 minutes long.

Commentary: To start our lesson off, the teacher will talk about the children’s prior experiences with weather.
To “hook” the children into the lesson, the teacher will have each of them talk about a time they played in the
snow, jumped in a puddle, saw fall leaves on the ground and made a pile to jump in, etc. The teacher will also
ask them what their favorite type of weather is and why. The teacher will then ask if there is snow on the
ground, can I go outside wearing shorts and t-shirt. If not, why? Also, the teacher will ask if it is hot outside
should I go out wearing a big winter jacket. If not, why? The teacher will ask, what is the issue with wearing a
shirt out in the cold? After these questions, the teacher will transition into the main lesson for the day.

Instructional Procedures:
Day 1:
First 10 minutes: Introductory activity- Students will sit around the circle time carpet as the teacher reads them
a book all about weather. In this book, it will talk about the different types of weather and when we experience
these types of weather (summer, spring, fall, winter). In between each pages, the teacher will stop and go
around asking the children if they had experiences with the type of weather we read about on each page. After
the book, the teacher will tell the children that we have all experienced these different types of weather and that
we already can tell the differences.
20 minutes: The teacher will go around asking each child to talk about their own personal experiences with the
different types of weather. Each child will take a few minutes sharing their own stories about weather and what
they’ve done in the snow, rain, fall leaves, hot sun, etc. Then, the teacher will talk about their own personal
experiences. After we have all talked about our experiences, the teacher will introduce the concept of winter,
spring, summer and fall. The teacher will talk about how during wintertime it is cold, and there is snow. In the
spring time, it starts to get warmer and flowers start to grow. In summer, it is hot and the sun is out and we can
go to the beach and swim in the ocean. In fall, it starts to get a little chilly as we prepare for wintertime to
come and the leaves on the trees start to turn brown and they slowly fall to the ground and become crunchy so
we can make huge leaf piles to jump into.
15 minutes: During the last 25 minutes of the lesson, I will have posters with the words “winter, spring,
summer and fall” written on them and have them taped up to my lesson board. Then, I will point to each
season and ask the children, “what happens during this season?” I will write down notes on what the children
already know, what they’re starting to learn, and what they need to learn more about.

Day 2:

First 10 minutes: The teacher will have the children watch a short, 10 minute video about weather. In this
video the children will learn more about weather while having visuals to make it easier for them to envision
what they are learning about.
Next 20 minutes: After the video, the teacher will have a tablet set up to a weather game that they will have
each child take a turn playing during circle time. As a child is playing the game, the teacher will have the other
children reading small weather books that have been provided for them to read as they are waiting for their
turn. On the tablet, the game will be matching the weather. There will be a picture of a child wearing shorts
and a shirt and the child must match if the child is dressed for winter, spring, summer, or fall. Then it will
continue to show different children in different outfits and they must match each child to the correct season.
Last 15 minutes: The teacher will have the children do an activity that they have printed out for them. In the
activity, there will be 6 pictures of 6 different types of weather. There will also be 6 words that the children
need to cut out in order to glue onto the correct picture. The words will be: sunny, rainy, snowy, cloudy, windy
and foggy.
Day 3:

First 10 minutes: The teacher will have another short video for the children to watch. This video will be
summarizing everything we have learned over the span of 2 days. The weather, seasons the weathers are
related to, what we wear during different types of weather, and what the weather looks like. After the video,
the teacher will ask each child to tell me one thing they learned during the video or one thing they remembered
learning about that they also heard again in the video.
Next 20 minutes: The teacher will have the children do a weather book activity. On each page, the children
will glue the correct weather word to the weather picture. Once the book is complete, they will write their
name on the front of the book and write “My favorite season is _ because _.” Then, they will draw a picture of
them doing something related to the season they wrote down and this will be the front cover of their book that
they will take home for their parents to see.
Last 15 minutes: The teacher will have each child take turns with the tablet again but with a different game. In
this game, you match the words to the correct picture. Similar to the activity on paper that we did the day
before, but in the format of a game on the tablet. The other children will be reading different weather books
while they wait for their turn with the tablet.

Pre-Assessment:
Prior to the first book read, the teacher will go around asking the children questions about their prior
experiences to weather to see where their knowledge currently lies when it comes to weather. The teacher will
also briefly explain their own personal experiences with weather and the children will become familiar with
what the book will be about.

Scoring Guidelines:
The teacher will write down the children’s answers in their notebook. They will write down notes and
keep tab on what the students already know about weather, what they briefly know, and what they need
to learn about further.

Post-Assessment:
During the final activity on day 3, the teacher will keep tab on the children’s progress as they are
completing the assignment and will refrain from helping them as much as possible. By doing this, the
teacher will see what the children have learned and how well they can remember all the information
they’ve learned and if they can put the book together properly.
Scoring Guidelines:
The teacher will use their own personal judgment on how well the students have learned this subject
and whether or not another project/activity will have to be done. The teacher will keep written notes at
all times during the 3 day span so that they can see how each child is individually progressing.

Differentiated Instructional Support

For gifted students, the instructions can be altered by having a project that can be done at home and will be
presented to the class. In this project, the students will act like weather reporters and must do a fake weather
report on their chosen weather/season and record it at home using their parent’s cell phone, webcam, video
camera, etc. Once this is recorded, the video must be emailed to the teacher so that it can be presented to the
class.
For students who may be struggling with this subject, a few students will be chosen to be the “helpers” of the
class and will go around assisting each child who may need extra help on their activities.

Extension
https://www.abcya.com/games/dress_for_the_weather
This site is a free website where children can play a weather game and learn more about weather while also
having fun doing so. This website can be utilized either at school during free time on the tablets or at home on
their computers for extra practice at home.

Homework Options and Home Connections

There will be different worksheets on weather that will be sent home. Each worksheet will be related to the
topic we just learned and there will be crafts to do at home as well like making a rain cloud and a snow cloud.
There will be matching activities as well to do that are similar to the ones that were done in class.

Interdisciplinary Connections
In this lesson, students are using their prior knowledge to share their own personal experiences with weather.
They are also skills that are necessary for them to listen to their peers, listen to the book and video, and talk
about what they learned, what they retained from the video/book, and using this information to help them
complete the activities.
