Math 2250 Written HW #13 Solutions

1. The largest right circular cone that can be inscribed in a sphere of radius 3 has a volume of 32π/3. This is found by maximizing the volume function V(y) = 1/3π(27 + 9y - 3y^2 - y^3) subject to the constraint 0 ≤ y ≤ 3. The maximum occurs at y = 1. 2. The maximum volume of the trough described is √15 3, which occurs when the angle θ = π/6. This is found by maximizing the volume function V(θ) = 20cosθ + 20sinθcosθ subject to the constraint 0 ≤ θ ≤ π/2.

Math 2250 Written HW #13 Solutions

1. Find the volume of the largest right circular cone that can be inscribed in a sphere of radius
3. An illustration is given on p. 261, problem #12. Remember that the volume of a circular
cone with radius r and height h is 31 πr2 h. (Hint: which variable you choose to express the
volume in terms of makes a big difference in how easy it is to differentiate)
Answer: First, notice that, by the Pythagorean Theorem,

x2 + y 2 = 32 ,

meaning that
x2 = 9 − y 2 .

Also, since the volume of a cone with radius r and height h is 31 πr2 h, we know that the volume
of the cone is
1 2 1 1
πx (3 + y) = π(9 − y 2 )(3 + y) = π 27 + 9y − 3y 2 − y 3 .

3 3 3
Therefore, we want to maximize the function V (y) = 13 π 27 + 9y − 3y 2 − y 3 subject to the

constraint 0 ≤ y ≤ 3.
To find the critical points, we differentiate:
1
V 0 (y) = π 9 − 6y − 3y 2 = π 3 − 2y − y 2 = π(3 + y)(1 − y).

3
Therefore, V 0 (y) = 0 when
π(3 + y)(1 − y) = 0,
meaning that y = −3 or y = 1. Only y = 1 is in the interval [0, 3], so that’s the only critical
point we need to concern ourselves with.
Now we evaluate V at the critical point and the endpoints:
1
V (0) = π 27 + 9(0) − 3(0)2 − 03 = 9π

3
1 32π
V (1) = π 27 + 9(1) − 3(1)2 − 13 =
3 3
1 2 3

V (3) = π 27 + 9(3) − 3(3) − 3 = 0.
3
32π
Therefore, the volume of the largest cone that can be inscribed in a sphere of radius 3 is 3 .

2. Problem #24 from p. 262 of the textbook.

Answer: The volume of the trough is simply the area of the cross-section times the length,
which is 20.
Now, to determine the area of the cross-section, notice that, if b is the base of one of the right
triangles, then
b
sin θ = = b.
1

1
Likewise, if h is the height of one of the right triangles, then
h
cos θ = = h.
1
Therefore, the area of each right triangle is
1 1
bh = sin θ cos θ.
2 2
In turn, the area of the rectangle is

1 · h = 1 · cos θ = cos θ.

Therefore, the area of the cross-section is the sum of the area of the rectangle and the areas
of the two triangles:
1 1
A = cos θ + sin θ cos θ + sin θ cos θ = cos θ + sin θ cos θ.
2 2
Therefore, the volume of the trough is

V (θ) = 20A = 20(cos θ + sin θ cos θ) = 20 cos θ + 20 sin θ cos θ,

which we want to maximize subject to the constraint 0 ≤ θ ≤ π/2.

First, differentiate to find critical points:

V 0 (θ) = −20 sin θ + 20 cos2 θ − 20 sin2 θ.

Notice that cos2 θ − sin2 θ = cos 2θ, so we can simplify V 0 (θ) as

V 0 (θ) = −20 sin θ + 20 cos 2θ.

Therefore, V 0 (θ) = 0 when

−20 sin θ + 20 cos 2θ = 0,
or, equivalently, when
cos 2θ = sin θ.
On the interval [0, π/2], this only happens at θ = π/6, so this is our critical point.
Now, check the critical point and the endpoints:

V (0) = 20 cos(0) + 20 sin(0) cos(0) = 20

√ √
3 1 3 √
V (π/6) = 20 cos(π/6) + 20 sin(π/6) cos(π/6) = 20 · + 20 · · = 15 3
2 2 2
V (π/2) = 20 cos(π/2) + 20 sin(π/2) cos(π/2) = 0.

Since 15 3 > 20, we see that the maximum volume occurs when the angle θ = π/6.
