EXERCISE 25 : Use Parallel Structure with Paired Conjunctions


1. I According to the syllabus, you can either write a paper or you can take an
exam
Reason: write a paper (phrase) is not parallel to you can take an exam (clause),
because both are different form. You can take an exam should be take an exam

2. C It would be both noticed and appreciated if you could finish the work before
you leave
Reason: the word noticed and appreciated is parellel, because both has the same form,
as a verb two and the sentences has right paired conjunctions both…and,

3. I She would like neither to see a movie or to go bowling


Reason: the sentence are incorrect because the wrong part of the paired conjunction
are use together. or should be used with nor

4. C Either the manager or her assistant can help you with your refund
Reason: the word the manager and her assistant is parellel, because both has the same
form, as a noun. And the sentences has right paired conjunctions Either…or,

5. I She wants not only to take a trip to Europe but she also would like to travel
to Asia
Reason: to take a trip to Europe (phrase) is not parallel to she also would like to
travel to Asia (clause), because both are different form. She also would like to travel
to Asia should be but also to Asia

6. I He could correct neither what you said nor you wrote


Reason: because neither and nor is releated and the sentences is not parallel.

7. I Both the tailor or the laundress could fix the damage to the dress
Reason: the sentence are incorrect because the wrong part of the paired conjunction
are use together. or should be used with and
8. C He not only called the police department but also called the fire department
Reason: Conjunctions in pairs are true and parallel showing equality and similarity

9. I You can graduate either at the end of the fall semester or you can graduate
either at the end of the fall semester
Reason: at the end of the fall semester (preposition phrase) is not parallel to you can
graduate either at the end of the fall semester (clause), because both are different
form. We should omit “the second you can graduate” at that sentence

10. I The movie was neither amusing nor was it interesting


Reason: amusing is not parallel to was it interesting, because both are different form.
We should omit “was it” at that sentence so that both of them become the same form,
as an adjective
