Background on MYBYK
Cycling used for transportation, recreation, exercise or sports also has major benefits
of health improvement, pollution free transportation, low cost travelling. In India
cycling is not considered as mode of transportation for urban mobility but there are
various European and certain East Asian countries encourage the culture of cycling
as a common mode of transport in the city and have built supporting infrastructural
facilities. In India, currently 25- 30 per cent of daily commuting is by walking and
cycling which needs to be encouraged by providing better facilities for them on
roads. Current cycling trends show that majority of cycling is done for transport by
the poor. There is also a growing tribe of very high-end cyclists who do this for
leisure and endurance exercise.
One fifth of the population of India comprises of youth for whom cycle may become a
potential mode of transport. Increase in the usage of cycle may lead to certain social
changes like benefit to health & environment. For bringing the cycling in youth
culture and making it long term habit many education institute, clubs take aninitiative
by partnering with cycling related service venture.
There have been various studies carried out on different universities like Ohio State
University, where the survey of transportation of 2015 was used to understand the
Attitudinal influencing factors for cycling. Various parameters like perception of living
in a bicycle-friendly community; perception of bicycling barriers; bicycling willingness
upon facility availability; awareness of bicycling benefits; familiarity with local
bicycling information; preference for bicycling; sensitivity to bicycle security; and
perception of the availability of campus bicycle facilities (Namgung and Jun, 2018).It
was found that the availability of facilities was an important factor which lead towards
willingness to use. Moreover, positive feedbacks were obtained from people more
experienced at riding at bicycle while less positive response from people less
experienced in riding cycle. U.S faces a similar situation like India where 11% of the
daily trips are happening by walking and 1% through cycling. It was found that riding
a cycle was directly linked with economic status of the person. Informal conversation
with few students in Ahmedabad also gave us an similar understanding for
perception of cycling in Indian society.

On 7th March 2018 MyByk facility was partnered with Ahmedabad University
(AU)to ease of mobility across various schools in the University for students, faculty
members, administrative staff.
Initially when the services were offered for free, students were enthusiastically using
it. Slowly there was lack of awareness of the facility with a new batch. The informal
discussion with the AU citizens bring some issues on the surface such as payment
system for cycling service, user interface for using MyByk service, accessibility of
cycling at the different location, Baggage carrying issues while cycling, preference to
two wheeler over bicycle. Cycling has some major benefits such as health benefit,
pollution free transport, low cost travelling. Because of all these benefits we desire
an active participation for bicycle usage in the campus by overcoming certain
barriers which hinder the usage. These discussion lead to certain insights which
framed our assumptions about the barriers where riding a cycle shows an
economical poor status for which certain steps for rebranding of the image of cycle is
required. Moreover, if anyone is willing to pay the deposits for the usage they face a
problem of inconvenient user interface of complicated mobile applications. Thus by
focusing on the change of attitude and belief system of the AU citizens would lead to
solving certain social problems like creating sustainable university by making riding a
cycle is a fun activity which in return will help in achieving health benefits to the
users.
Lack of studies in the Indian context has lead us to initiate a study at the University
level, we plan to perform a pilot study by collect the sample data from Ahmedabad
university in order to understand that though facilities for cycling are available what
are the hindering factors for the usage for which questionnaire method along with
practically implementing certain changes will be adopted to understand the
influencing factors which affect non-cycling behaviour among students.
Our vision for implementation of the idea is to increase the usage of bicycles,
creating environment friendly campus by making it a pocket friendly venture. In near
future, to achieve more usage of MyByk facility we are planning to introduce Hashtag
on Instagram and other social medias. Apart from that, we will collaborate with
different clubs like, photography, sports and fitness to promote exercise and habit of
cycling. In long term, system of payment by loading money in ID card which can be
3
scanned on usage. Moreover, points will be collected in the account which may be
redeem as discount in the later rides.
