Problem Solving Report On Child Labour: Group-5

The student group conducted research on child labor at three sites: a market, construction site, and neighborhoods where maids work. They interviewed approximately 22-23 children between 8-16 years old. At the market, children helped earn money for their families by selling goods after school or in the evening. At the construction site, a 16-year-old boy worked since both parents had died. In the neighborhoods, one girl helped her working mother after school, while another came from a village to work seasonally as a maid. The research found that many children work not because they do not attend school, but to help support their families financially or themselves due to difficulties at home.

We conducted the research for child labour on three different sites which were
the Law Garden market, construction site and the societies where maids work.
We were able to find approximately 22-23 children who were working for their
living. We had a talk with them and tried to find out the main reason behind
them working at a young age. The children all belonged to the age group of 8-16
years. The children selling goods at the Law garden market said that they sell the
goods in the evening and they help their parents to earn money who are also
either involved in selling goods or they are working at some other places. The
five kids who were of young age of around 8-10 years said that they visited the
municipality school in the morning and helped their parents in the evening by
selling kitchens and balloons. Their parents were also selling some goods in the
market and as their financial situation was not good they had to work to fulfil
their financial situation. The kids were very hardworking and they said that they
were able earn around Rs. 500 every day. The other kids that we met were of
some older age around 10-13 and they were very good salesman, they were
around 15 kids and among them only one boy was going to school and other said
that they didn’t like to go to school because the teacher were beating them, we
found the real reason afterwards that their parents did not pay the school fees on
time and therefore they didn’t go to school. They sold decorative items in the
bazaar and their fathers work as Dolis, they live near Juna Wadaj. They were able
earn around Rs. 1000-1500 in a day.

The other site visited was societies where girls work as maids at different houses.
There were 2 girls whom we interviewed, one was going to school and afterwards
came to help her mother, she also has a brother who works in the society itself
but he didn’t wish to study any further therefore he was not going to school. The
other girl came from village and she works during the non-harvesting season as
maid and in harvesting seasons she went to village for farming, she did not study
because she failed and then she lost interest in studying.

The third site we visited was a construction site where a 16 year boy worked to
earn his living as both his parents are dead and therefore the construction
company head gave him his father’s job, he goes to school on some days has
because the teachers did not teach well in the school and therefore he used to
work on some days and attend school on others. Through this small research we
found out that it is not that the kids are not going to school, some of them also
get to go to school but the main reason for them to work at such young age is
because to help the family whose financial situation are bad, to help to over-
working mother and to earn the living for themselves, these kids at a young age
are able to understand their share of responsibility and try to help their parents
or themselves.
