4th grade Math Operations and Algebraic thinking

Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.OA.A.1

Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, e.g., interpret 35 = 5 × 7 as a statement that

35 is 5 times as many as 7 and 7 times as many as 5. Represent verbal statements of

multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations.

Objective: The student will be able to convert word expressions into algebraic expressions by

using critical thinking skills and identifying the numbers needed to convert into equations.

Materials: Mini White boards, Dry erase Markers, erasers, Notebooks, Pencils

Procedures: follow step by step (steps 1 &2 will be whole class involved step 3 will be individual

to group work steps 4 & 5 will be individual student work)

1.) 10-minute lecture on new material instructing how we will be converting these word problem

into equations while giving relevant examples and answering question as they arise

2.) Post question on board to test student knowledge and ask them to convert first problem into

equation on their white board. (small activity about 10-minute game maybe three or four

attempts to grasp their understanding about)

3.) Have students try problem on their own and then consult with group to ensure their peers

have an understanding. Give each group a representative to answer on their white boards first

team to get correct answer may be rewarded. (reward examples: one less question on quiz or pick

from prize box)

4.) Review problems most struggled with have them take notes and copy down example

problems for reference to study when used at home.

5.) Mini quiz to ensure students have grasped new material and assign homework based off what

students showed needed improvement.

Assessment: Students will be graded by participation in white board mini game and mini quiz

given. 5 points for participation and 10 points for quiz homework will be worth 5 points.

Students will show level of knowledge retained during both these activities to inform us on how

to proceed with further instruction Homework will verify understanding of subject.
