New Tools and Features in MineSight® 3-D

Versions 4.50 and 5.0
Mintec, Ic. is pleased to announce the additions and enhancements to our flagship
application, MineSight 3-D (MS3D), for versions 4.50 (released in December 2008) and 5.0
(to be released later in 2009). There are a number of new tools and features, as well as a
sizable list of enhancements to existing tools and functions. This workshop is intended to
describe and demonstrate these new additions to the MineSight programs.

MS3D Version 4.50

Released in December 2008, MS3D Version 4.50 contains a number of new tools and menu
entries. New tools include the Polyline | Explode function, which splits a polyline into
its constituent line segments; the Surface | Verify function, which collects three previous
functions from the Surface menu (Surface | Openings, Surface | Duplicate Faces,
and Surface | Self-intersecting faces) into one convenient dialog; The Surface | Size
Parameters dialog, which reports surface area and volume data on user-selected surface
elements; Polyline | Polyline Offset with Vectors, which allows you to specify an offset
direction or directions to apply to all or part of a polyline for offset in certain situations;
and a new Virtual Elements option on the Utilities menu, which replaces the previous
Utility Marker nomenclature and functionality.
Significant enhancements have also been added to a number of existing MineSight tools.
New functionality allows the selection of LGO surfaces through the Object Contents
Browser when selecting for most surface functions; enhancements have been made to the
Grid Set creation dialog which allow the definition of a Grid Set between the start and
end points of a polyline and the specification of Grid and Cell size at creation; the Blast
Pattern Editor has received enhancements which allow more flexible BH naming, better
verification of BH spacing and more powerful Sorting and Export functionality. The Pit
Expansion Tool has a number of new features, including the ability to lock the Viewer
elevation to the planes of pit design, follow a ramp grade at the centerline and produce
inclined pit designs. The Ring Design Tool has been improved with the addition of the
ability to better filter element visibility and a new element called Primer for the storage of
detonator details. Polyline | Clip Polylines, Points and Labels tool has been enhanced
with the addition of the ability to close clipped polylines with the clipping boundary.
MineSight Interactive Planner (MSIP) now contains a direct function for the creation of
End-of-Period maps and the MineSight Haulage (MSHaulage) module has added the
Mintec, Inc. ability to subdivide lifts into subzones for more detailed destination modeling. The Model
Global View Properties dialog now allows filtering based on Python™ syntax, a feature which
Mining has been available previously only for DH View filtering. Finally, a few major changes
Software have occurred in the background which will provide more efficient script interpretation
Solutions through the introduction of MPYTHON, a MineSight specific Python installation; this new
Since functionality also provides much better resistance to any issues that might result from the
1970 installation of other software that also uses Python.

New Tools and Menu Revisions in MS3D Version 4.50

Polyline Explode
Polyline Explode is a new CAD function found on the Polyline menu. This function
will ‘explode’ a selected polyline into its constituent line segments. Identification of the

Page 1

polyline elements to be exploded is made through left mouse click or Ctrl+A if you wish to
explode all selected polylines. Right-click both performs the ‘explode’ and terminates the
function.

right to ‘explode’ and end the function.

Polyline Offset with Vectors

This new CAD function allows a polyline (or portion of a polyline) to be offset using either Mintec, Inc.
relative or absolute vector definitions. This tool requires that the polyline to be offset be Global
selected, and is available for use on one polyline/polygon at a time. The options available in
Mining
this new function are quite comprehensive. The following illustrations demonstrate the use

Verify and Repair Surfaces and Solids

This new addition to the Surface menu (Surface | Verify) provides a convenient single
interface which replaces the three previous Surface options Duplicate Faces, Openings,
and Self-intersecting Faces. To verify the surface(s) of interest, it is not necessary that they
be selected, while it is necessary to first select the surfaces to perform any repairs on them.

To use one of the Verify options, choose Surface | Verify from the MS3D menu and click
left on the surface(s) you wish to verify; when finished choosing surfaces, click right to
activate the tool. Clicking Ctrl+A will select all of the surfaces in the Viewer. Confirm
that the options are correctly set; typically, it is not necessary to set a maximum area for
verifying or when patching triangulated solids, but this setting can prevent problems when
patching openings in an open surface such as the topo surface in this example. Click the
Verify button to get a report in the Message Window and orange indicator markers in the
Viewer showing where openings have been found. To convert these indicators into Virtual
Elements which can be saved, click the button to Convert Verify Highlights to Virtual
Elements. This will convert the orange highlight indicators to purple Virtual Elements
which can be saved using the Utilities | Virtual Elements | Move to Edit Object.
To repair the openings in the surface, it is necessary to select the surface for editing prior
to repair (if you select data with the Verify dialog open, the dialog will close). Choose the
surface(s) to repair as in the verify example above, but now the Repair option is active and
this choice will repair the opening(s) with triangulated patches. Optional check boxes allow
you to limit the largest area to be patched (necessary with open surface data) and/or save
the patches to a separate Geometry Object for independent examination and analysis.

The same techniques are available for use when verifying or repairing Duplicate Faces or
Self-intersecting Faces. This new interface provides a convenient single dialog with which
to perform these common surface functions.

Surface Size Parameters

This new tool on the MS3D Surface menu is the surface/solid counterpart to the often used
Mintec, Inc. Polyline | Size Parameters tool, which reports length and area for polylines and polygons
through the Viewer, and reports area and volume information. To access this new interface,

Virtual Elements Menu

The Virtual Elements menu is located under the Utilities menu in the MS3D interface. This
new menu entry replaces the previous Utility Markers menu, and there have been some
minor changes in the options on this menu.

The first change is in the Move to Edit Object option, which replaces the previous Copy
Software
to Edit Object function. This option now creates a Geometry Element in the Edit object
from the Virtual Element, and the original Virtual Element is deleted. A last, even more
Solutions
minor change was the renaming of the Clear options so that they now refer to Virtual Since
Elements as opposed to the old terminology. The functionality of these options has not 1970
changed. The colors used to display the Virtual Elements can be modified using the Viewer
| Preferences dialog.

Enhancements to Existing Tools in MineSight Version 4.50

A number of existing tools have received a variety of enhancements, including the Large
Gridded Object (LGO), creation and management of Grid Sets, the Blast Pattern Editor

(BPE), the Ring Design Tool, Polyline|Clip Polylines, Points and Labels, MSIP Period
Maps, Model View Properties, MSHaulage, and Mintec Python Installation (MPython).

Enhanced LGO Functionality

The LGO has been added as an option for surface selection through the Object Contents
Browser (OCB) option in tools and functions which allow the use of these surfaces. An
example of this can be found in the Intersect Surfaces Tool, as shown here. To select an LGO
surface through the OCB, click the OCB Selection button for the appropriate surface field.

Blast Pattern Editor

The Blast Pattern Editor (BPE) has undergone numerous enhancements. The newly revised
tool is much more versatile, making blast pattern design and editing a simpler and more
effective process. In order to make the BPE more intuitive four additional tabs have been
added: Name, Verify, Export, and Options.
The Name tab is used to add unique, customized names to new blastholes being designed
and also allows existing blastholes to be renamed.

Polyline|Clip Polylines, Points and Labels

An exciting new enhancement has been added to the Polyline Clipping Tool—the ability
to close clipped polylines to polygons using the clipping boundary. The clipping boundary
can be either a polygon or a surface, and the polygons clipped by the boundary will be
closed following the boundary, adding points as needed to match the clipping boundary.
The images below illustrate the usage of this new option using a set of interpreted vein
polygons that are to be clipped to the surface representing a fault. The Edit Grid option was
used since the clipping surface is vertical; default behavior assumes a generally horizontal
clipping surface.

The Geometry area of the dialog contains a field to
select the target folder, check boxes for different types
of results, and entries for a variety of naming options.
The naming options can use certain wildcards to
automatically insert either the period name or period
number (or both) as part of the geometry object name,
and a zero padding specification can be entered.
The Options area provides an option to Assign
material using object name, options to use bench toe
or model item values to define elevations, and a cut
merging tolerance.
Once the various parameters are defined, a Preview
can be displayed by clicking the Preview button, and
the geometry will be created in the target folder when
Apply is clicked. Note that it is necessary to Refresh
the target folder in order to populate it with the results.

MineSight Haulage
MineSight Haulage (MSHaulage), released in MS3D version 4.10, has been enhanced in
a number of ways. New options now make it feasible to divide an ‘atomic’ reserve unit
for multiple destinations, and define subzones for those destinations. New convenience
enhancements will auto-populate elevations, rolling resistance and maximum speed fields
when a route is divided by the user. A new IP attribute can be used to store cut sequencing
information, as well as additional cut management functionality. Additional details
regarding MSHaulage will be available at the MSHaulage workshop at this year’s Annual
Mintec Seminar.

Summary of Specific Enhancements

A number of enhancements have been made to MS3D for version 4.50, and they are
Mintec, Inc. tabulated here. Some of these enhancements are transparent, consisting of improvements to
Global the underlying code; others resulted in visible changes to one or more dialogs, but with little
Mining if any change in the techniques required to use these new options.
Software CAD Menu Changes
Solutions
Since • Point menu—There are some changes in the underlying code for the Point | Create
1970 at Center of Mass (polyline) functionality, but there is no change in the way the
tool is used; and the General Gridder Tool has been enhanced to allow the selection
of multiple surfaces. If the surfaces overlap, the highest surface will be gridded.
• Element menu—Element attribute has been re-coded to provide a faster operation
when attributing large amounts of data.

Page 21
New Tools and Features in MineSight® 3-D Versions 4.50 and 5.0

• Polyline menu—Two new entries (Polyline | Explode and Polyline | Offset with
Vectors); Polyline | Offset and Polyline | Substring | Offset now can honor Edit
Grid orientation; Polyline | Clip Polylines, Points and Labels enhanced with
option to close clipped strings with boundary; the Polyline | Substring | Dynamic
Erase function has been updated; and Polyline | Size Parameters has also been
enhanced with a dialog update.
• Surface menu—Two new entries (Surface | Verify and Surface | Size
Parameters); additional warning message on Surface | Triangulate with
Selection; and enhanced Preview display in Surface | Create | Extrude Tool.

Other General Enhancements and Updates

Many enhancements have been made to internal routines within MS3D and other members
of the MineSight suite of software. Most of these enhancements will be completely
transparent to you. Some of the more obvious changes include implementation of six
decimals of precision throughout MSCompass procedure panels; faster processing in
standalone engines such as the union engine; better performance in MSDART when used
to find the limits of an ASCII file; better limit performance in the Isopachs Tool; improved
selection in the MS3D Viewer when displaying surface models as polylines; and the
addition of a new Python library (MPYTHON) intended to eliminate any problems if other
software utilizing Python is installed on the computer.
There are additional enhancements and additions to MineSight that are in process, or
targeted for the next release of MS3D (Version 5.0). These new enhancements will make
MS3D even more powerful and easy to use than ever before. Many of these new features are
outlined in the remainder of the workshop, and there are sure to be even more great new
features by the time this new version is released.

MS3D Version 5.0

In addition to the great new options already available in MS3D version 4.50, Mintec’s
developers have begun improvements to MS3D to be added for version 5.0, expected to be
released later in 2009. A substantial number of MineSight Grail (MSGrail) enhancements
have been added, allowing users of the MSGrail scripts to gain access to a wider variety of
data such as read/write access to *.srv, *.srg, and *.dxf files. These enhancements,
in addition to other tools that allow the creation of a Project and the MineSight Planning
Database (MSPD), add a much greater degree of flexibility for automating often-used
MineSight functionality through MSGrail. Additional enhancements are scheduled for the
Ring Design Tool, Model View Editor, and MSDART, as well as the first use of ‘plug-in’
technology to permit easier upgrading of various MineSight components.
Mintec, Inc.
Some of the specific enhancements that are scheduled for inclusion MS3D 5.0 include the Global
following: Mining
Software
Non-orthogonal (parallel to the Edit Grid) digitizing in Point Editor. - 4.7 (RFE: 9259)
The Point Editor has a new addition to its functionality which is Use Edit Grid. This new Solutions
function allows you to create a polyline and polygon parallel to the Edit Grid with an option Since
to specify Azimuth angle and 2D distance relative to the Edit Grid orientation. 1970

Global Coding 3DBM Directly from a Surface
Mining An exciting new feature in the MS3D Model View Edi-
Software tor is the ability to code to the model directly from a
Solutions single surface. An additional selection has been added
Since to the Model View Editor Code Model tab so you can
1970 specify coding From Surfaces.
The same coding options available for coding with
solids are also available for coding from a surface; an
additional subtab is activated when selecting From Sur-
faces that allows you to specify coding above or below
the surface.

New option for “polygon partitioning” (building cuts) in Polyline Clip Tool
A new enhancement has been added to Polyline | Clip Polylines, Points and Labels.
The combination of Split at boundaries and the new Close polygons against boundary
option allows you to create MSIP cuts within a polygon boundary. One of the applications
is multiple cuts over a grade control block model and these cuts need to be clipped at a
boundary (polygon). MSIP cuts need to be selected, but not boundary polygon. Select a

Enhancements to MSGrail
A number of new enhancements have been added to the MSGrail library of scripts. The
Surface Intersector Tool has been exposed to MSGrail, so this tool can be utilized in new
MSGrail scripts; creation of a new PCF or MineSight Model File has also been added to
the MSGrail library of functions to allow the automation of these tasks from a script; and
another new entry in the MSGrail library allows the use of existing MSCompass multi-run

Finally, the Database Manager script has been enhanced to allow the execution of a
Microsoft® SQL Query through MineSight directly.
The additions and enhancements to MS3D versions 4.50 and 5.0 illustrate the commitment
that Mintec has made to continue development of new solutions to the common problems
that our clients face on a daily basis. With continued input from you, our valued MineSight
users, we intend to continue to accelerate our development efforts to make MineSight the
premier mine planning and design software package.
