“GANITO KAMI NOON, PAANO KAYO NGAYON?”

A film made a few years late in the 19 th Century, directed by Eddie Romero starring
Christopher de Leon and former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz. It’s easy to say “I am a Filipino”.
But when can a person be considered as a true Filipino? In the movie, the word “Filipino” had
different definition.

Nicholas Ocampo also called Kulas, was the main character in the film. He was
innocently set to find a friar’s son at the peak of the Philippine revolution against the Spanish
colonization. He was able to meet people who influenced his way of thinking and his way of
living during his voyage. He was able to meet different kinds of people like Filipino
revolutionaries, Spanish friars, Guardia civils, circus folks that he met Diding, a girl whom he
fell in love with, and Filipino leaders who recognized themselves as the real Filipinos. Kulas
was confused on what a Filipino is, on who has the right to call himself as a true Filipino. He
had no idea of what Filipino is, or why he was called as one. He asked Don Tibor, a Visayan
lawyer, if he has the right to call himself a Filipino, the lawyer answered that in order to be a
Filipino one must be a worthy and valuable person. Kulas have a lot of problems and trials
during his stay in Manila. He experienced being respected, being bullied, being heartbroken,
and being betrayed by the people around him. Kulas realized that it is not enough to be born
in the country in ordered to be called a Filipino, that being a Filipino doesn’t only mean the
physical ties a person has with the land, or with tradition, or even with his family. He looks at
life with hope and curiosity.

The revolution also helped in shaping the Filipino identity. The revolution unified the
people. Without the revolution, we would still be under the hands of colonizers without
having an identity of our own. Though the colonization and Filipino revolution helped in the
creation of the Filipino identity, each also brought negative impacts the hindered the Filipino
to create an identity of their own.
Those who had money or were in the upper class of the society tried hard to dress and
act like Americans in order to blend with the colonizers and also to flaunt their newly bought
things and their fluency in speaking the American language. They believed that they belonged
with the Americans and not Filipinos.

Many of the Filipino’s ideas and interests have changed. Now, technology rises and
new trends have been made. Sometimes, Filipinos now tend to forget what is important and
what is significant. Filipinos are simply going with the flow. They will go to where they will
surely benefit, or to where they can gain much. People patronize more the products that came
from other countries rather than the products that were made here in the Philippines. The
Filipino culture have been mixed by the different cultures from neighboring countries Japan,
Kore, China and others because of marriage between members of different groups.

When we talk about the government runs the country is becoming of poorer quality.
They are not serving the country because once the election runs, they want to win and they are
do anything to win to that election. They are only wanting is to acquire more money and use it
for personal use. There are a lot of crimes that happened but they didn’t focus in that crimes
but they are focusing in the stupid things that are not important. Like this issue, proposing to
change the last line from the current one that declares the Filipino’s readiness, when faced
with an oppressor, to die for the country into one that vows to defend freedom. If we are
thinking this issue, why it should be change? If there is no reason to change it. There’s a lot of
problems and issues in our country that they need to resolve but, in that case, the first thing
that they’ll do is to think the very stupid things that are not important.

We talk about the Filipino culture before and now. Filipino culture is a big reflection
of our great and complex history. It is influenced by most of the people we have interacted
with. Filipino culture before is very diverse. Like, Mano po. Before, when children or young
people greet or say greet to their elders, they typically do so by taking the right hand of the
elder with their right hand and touch the back the elder’s hand lightly on their forehead. It is a
way of giving respect to the elders. But now, there are so many youths that they are not
respected their parents or the elders. When the parents disciplined their children, their son or
daughter is shouting them and he/she is the one will be mad at their parents. And that is not
right because you are not respected the elders especially their parents. I don’t know why the
other youths act like they know what they are doing but they aren’t. They ruin their future
because they want to be happy and just be with their friends rather than their family. We are
live once; we didn’t know what will be happen tomorrow or in other day. We didn’t hold our
lives and we don’t know if we can stay with our parents for a long time. If I were you, I
should be happy and spend more time with my family especially with my parents because
every year they are growing old.

Many young people today are pregnant early because they are stubborn and do not
listen to what their parents say or do but follow their own rules and thus endanger life. They
can only understand what their parents say when the experience it. If we compared today lives
to before, the ladies before have a curfew because their father will be mad at them when they
are not following the time that given. Woman are extremely modest and not easy to get. Men
will go to the house of the women they are love, to ask permission to the parents that he will
be courting their daughter. Sometimes, the men will be surprised the woman like visiting to
the house with singing or giving a flower. That is the formal courting the woman unlike
today, men get easily their woman.

Homeland slavery, abduction of lands, oppression of wealthy philanthropists and

various other faces of our society should not happen because we have been conquered by
other nations. If we think that situation of Kulas, it is not right that is happening in our
country then we are being held or obeyed by another country.

If I compared the Filipino youth then have good moral attitude than Filipino youth
now. We are forgetting our objective, the aim that our ancestors have passed unto us, that was
protect and fight for what is good for our country. We cannot achieve this goal if we keep on
doing these things. It seems that in the present times, the definition of being a Filipino is
reduced to just being a citizen of the country. If you are a citizen of the Philippines, then you
can already be considered as a true Filipino.
