This activity improves players' timing onto passes while learning correct running lines under pressure. It involves a passer throwing to a runner who changes angles after receiving the ball to beat a defender. The drill progresses to include multiple passers and defenders, requiring attackers to cut angles and support players to run lines that exploit space created by the defense.

Improve your players’ timing onto the pass while helping them choose the correct running line under pressure at the same time with this simple activity.
1. A feeder passes to a runner
2. The runner takes the ball at pace, changing his angle as quickly as possible after taking the pass 1. Two ruck-pad holders come forward 2. Develop by making it a two-pass play 3. The first attacker fixes his defender and then passes to the runner 1. Develop further with three attackers against three defenders 2. Three ruck-pad holders come forward 3. The two potential receivers look to cut angles before and after the pass
CHALLENGE This helps develop evasive skills and an understanding of running lines to break through a defence. SET UP Up to three ruck pads, a ball. HOW TO DO IT A receiver starts his run towards a ruck pad receiving a pass from 9. As he takes the pass he uses his footwork to beat the defender with the pad (see picture 1). Then use a 2v2 exercise. 9 again passes to the first receiver with a second attacker either attacking on a close line or communicating and taking a pass outside the last ruck pad (see picture 2). Progress to a 3v3. The first receiver can use a short or miss pass as defenders come forward (see picture 3). TECHNIQUE Ball carrier: Attack the gain line and fix the opposite defender by attacking the space either side of him. Support/strike player: As the ball carrier attacks the defender and takes him to one side or hits the space between defenders, the support player runs a line that takes him into the space vacated by defenders
