PPE Weight Estimation With Calculations

The document summarizes the types, sizes, weights, and quantities of various personal protective equipment (PPE) used by frontline medical workers. It then estimates that 16 personnel could accommodate 7 patients over 24 hours, generating between 5,301-5,406 grams of waste PPE daily. Assuming the Vicente Sotto Memorial Center currently has 30 COVID-19 patients under observation, the estimated daily waste PPE generated by frontline workers would be around 23,171 grams.

Table 1. Approximate Weight of Personal Protection Equipment for Front liners
Engr. Luis Antonio Monisit last March 30, 2020 presented a front-liner summary for the
generation of PPEs:

The care of 7 patients, given a nurse-patient ratio of 1:7, over 24 hours will consume per medical
personnel a set of PPE:
1 nurse per shift = 3 nurses
1 doctor (24 hours)
__________________________
4 PPEs per 7 patients per day.

That is, given as midshift (e.g. lunch break) for nurses.

Additionally, estimated Medical Practitioners for 7 patients considering 2 shifts:

1 Radiologist per shift = 2 Radiologist
2 Medtech per shift = 4 Medtechs
2 Respiratory tech per shift = 4 Respiratory Tech
1 Consultant per shift = 2 Consultants

With a total of 16 personnel can accommodate 7 patients. These 16 personnel could generate a
total of 5,301.12 grams to 5406.72 grams of waste. (used in computation is the maximum value)

As of now, Vicente Sotto Memorial Center is the only accredited facility by the DOH to conduct
COVID-19 and to monitor COVID-19 patients. In the latest report last March 30, 2020 as of 5:00
pm, only 30 patients are positive of COVID-19 in Central Visayas and under observation in
Vicente Sotto
