(Candidates are allowed additional 15 minutes for only reading the paper.
They must NOT start writing during this time.)

All questions are compulsory.
This question paper is divided in 4 Sections A, B, C and D as follows.
Section A
Question number 1 is of twelve marks.All parts of this question are
compulsory.
Section B
Question numbers 2 to 12 carry 2 marks each with two questions having
internal choice.
Section C
Question numbers 13 to 19 carry 3 marks each with two questions having
internal choice.
Section D
Question numbers 20 to 22 are long-answer type questions and carry 5
marks each.
Each question has an internal choice. The intended marks for questions are
given in brackets [ ].
All working, including rough work, should be done on the same sheet as and
adjacent to the rest of the answer. Answers to sub parts of the same
question must be given in one place only. A list of useful physical constants
is given at the end of this paper. A simple scientific calculator without a
programmable memory may be used for calculations.

Answer all questions.

(B) Answer all questions given below briefly and to the point: [7x1]

(i) If the distance between the two equal point charges is


halved and their individual charges are doubled, what
would happen to the force between them?
(ii) What are the factors on which angular the dispersion of a
prism depends?
(iii) Are matter waves electromagnetic? Why?
(iv) What is meant by pair production .Write a balanced
equation for the same.
(v) Draw a labelled energy band diagram for a solid which is a
semiconductor?
(vi) The photoelectric threshold of sodium is 680 nm. Explain
its meaning.
(vii) What is the polarising angle for water?

SECTION B
Answer all questions.
Question 2 [2]
Using Gauss’ law, deduce the expression for electric field due to
uniformly charged spherical shell of radius R at a point outside the
shell.

Question 3 [2]
What is current density? Write the vector equation between current
density and electric field.

Question 4 [2]
Draw a labelled circuit diagram of a potentiometer to compare the emf’s
of two cells. Write the working formula.

Question 5 [2]
(a) Two long vertical straight wires A and B are 0.30 m apart and
carry currents of 1A and 2 A respectively in the upward direction.
(i) What is the nature of force between them?
(ii) Compute the force per unit length on wires; ignore the effect
of earth’s field.
OR
(b) Distinguish between diamagnetic and paramagnetic substances
in terms of their susceptibility and permeability when placed in a
uniform magnetic field.

Question 6 [2]
A concave mirror produces a real, four times magnified image of an
object placed at 10 cm in front of it.Find the position of the image and
the radius of the curvature of the mirror.

Question 7 [2]
Draw a diagram to show how an image is produced by a pair of total
reflecting prisms arranged in as in a periscope.

Question 8 [2]
In a single slit diffraction pattern, how does the angular width of
central maximum change,when (i)the slit width is increased (ii) light of
smaller wavelength is used?

(a) What is meant by forward bias and reverse bias in case of a p-n
junction diode?
OR
(b) Draw a labelled circuit diagram of simple common emitter
amplifier. What is the angle between the input and output
voltages.

Question 11 [2]
(i) Define resolving power of a simple astronomical telescope.
(ii) State one advantage of a reflecting telescope over refracting
telescope.

Question 12 [2]
Three point charges -1 C, 2 C and -1 C are placed at the three vertices
of an equilateral triangle of side 5cm each. Calculate the electrostatic
potential energy of the system of charges.

SECTION C
Answer all questions.
Question 13 [3]
(a) Obtain an expression for equivalent capacitance C, when three
capacitors having capacitance
C1,C2 and C3 are connected in series.
OR
(b) Obtain an expression for intensity of electric field intensity E at
any point P on the equatorial line of an electric dipole.

Question 14 [3]
A long wire is bent as shown in figure. Find the magnitude and
direction of the magnetic field at the centre O of the circular part, if a
current of 2 A is passed through the wire.

Question 15 [3]
When two thin lenses of focal lengths f1 and f2 are kept in contact, prove
that the combined focal length f is given by = +

Question 16 [3]
An alternating emf 110V is applied to a circuit containing a resistance
of 40 ! and an inductance L in series .The current lags behind the emf
by an angle tan-1(3/4).Find the inductive reactance, impedance of the
circuit and the current in circuit. If L =0.1H, find the frequency of
applied emf.

Question 17 [3]
Derive Snell’s law of refraction using Huygen’s wave theory.

Question 18 [3]
(a) Photoelectrons are emitted from a metal surface when ultraviolet
of wavelength 300nm is incident on it .The minimum negative
potential required to stop the emission of electrons is 0.45 V.
Calculate (i) the energy of incident photons (ii) the maximum
kinetic energy of the photoelectrons emitted (iii) work function of
the metal.
OR
(b) Using Einstein’s photoelectric equation, explain the laws of
photoelectric effect.

Calculate the energy released when " # emits an alpha particle

Answer all questions.
Question 20 [5]
(a) (i) In the circuit below E1 and E2 are batteries having emfs 4.0 V
and 3.5 V respectively and internal resistances 1Ω and 2 Ω
respectively .Using Kirchoff’s laws, calculate currents I1, I2 and I3.

(ii) How can a moving coil galvanometer can be converted into a
voltmeter of given range? Draw a labelled diagram to illustrate the
conversion.
OR
(b) (i) A parallel plate capacitor is charged by a battery which is then
disconnected. A dielectric slab is then inserted to fill the space
between the plates of the capacitor. Explain the changes, if any
that occur in the values of 1. capacitance 2. potential difference
between the plates 3. Energy stored in the capacitor.

(ii) Arrange the following electromagnetic waves in increasing


order of their frequencies.
Visible light, (-rays, X- rays, microwaves, radiowaves, infrared
radiation and ultraviolet radiation.

Question 21 [5]
(a) (i)State any two methods by which ordinary light can be polarised.
(ii) A compound microscope consists of an objective lens of focal
length 2.0cm and eye piece of focal length 6.25 cm separated by a
distance of 15cm.How far from the objective should an object be
placed in order to obtain the final image at the distance of least
distinct vision?
OR
(b) (i) In Young’s double slit experiment, what is meant by fringe-
width?
(ii) How is the fringe-width affected if the screen is moved closer to
the plane of the slits?
(iii) Draw a properly labelled graph between the angle of incidence
and the angle of minimum deviation for a prism. Show the point
of minimum deviation

Question 22 [5]
(a) (i) Compare frequency modulation and Amplitude modulation.
(ii) Write the truth table of the following circuit. Name the gate
represented by this circuit.

OR
(b) (i) Draw V-I Characteristics for p-n junction diode. Show the
zener voltage on the curve.

(ii) Figure shows a very long wire AB carrying constant current I.
The rectangular loop PQRS is taken away from the wire AB. What
will be the direction of current induced in the loop? Justify your
answer.
