Week 1 Odd & Even Function

The document discusses even, odd, and neither even nor odd functions. An even function satisfies f(-x) = f(x) for all x. An odd function satisfies f(-x) = -f(x) for all x. Examples of even functions given are x^2, x^4, cos(x). Examples of odd functions given are x, x^3. Most functions are neither odd nor even, such as x^3 - x.

Even Functions Qs

A function is "even" when: .

f(-x) for all x

f(x) = hra--r
f-zhZ

In other words they are ,rtX'#atry abor[ili]-u"i, ,, (like a reflection):

Examples of even function: x2, x4, X6, X8 ,cos(x) etc.

Figure: y = cos(r).

But an even exponent does not always make an even function.

Ex: (x+1)2 is not an even function.
f (x)=(x+t)2 =x2 *2x+L; f(-x)= (-r+ L), =xz -Zx+L. .'. f(x)*f(-x).

Odd Functions
A function is "odd" when:

-f(x) = -f(-x) for alt

It is symmetric to ongtn.

Examples of "odd" functions x, X3, X5, x7, etc.

Sine function: f(x) = sin(x)

It is an odd function
But an odd exponent does not always make an odd function, for
example x3+1 is not an odd function.

f(x) = x3 +t; -f(-x) = -[(-r)t + 1] = -[-rr + 1] = )c3 _L.

(x) = -f (-x).

Neither Odd nor Even
Most functions are neither odd nor even. For example, just adding 1to

This is the curvd f(x) = x3-x*l

It is not an odd function, and. it is not an even function either.
It is neither odd nor even

Even or Odd?
