General Guide for Studying for Exam 4

(This is not all inclusive, but highlights some of the material.)

Grief and Loss (18 – 20 questions)

1. Know definitions at the beginning of Chapter 43 in the Fundamentals book (Loss, Grief &
Dying).
2. Be able to define death both legally and medically.
3. Define a “good death,” know how to provide care, and know the IOM recommendations.
4. Identify signs of impending death and responses to dying.
5. Be familiar with legal and ethical aspects of dying: advanced directives, types of resuscitation
or withholding treatment, euthanasia, and palliative sedation.
6. Identify components of a trusting nurse-patient relationship.
7. Demonstrate postmortem care and describe caring for family, other patients and oneself.
8. Know developmental considerations that affect grief and dying.
9. Understand the difference between disenfranchised grief and complicated grieving.
10. Provide support to women who have miscarriages, still births, or abortion.
11. Identify strategies to prevent SIDS and how to assist families to cope.
12. Recognize the nursing process as it relates to the client with an amputation.

Health Care Disparities (15 – 18 questions)

1. Know definition and give examples of the populations who experience health care
disparities.
2. Define chronic illness and how health care disparities are related.
3. Address how socioeconomic status impacts health care disparities.
4. Be familiar with culturally competent care and why it is so hard to provide.
5. Identify cultural influences on growth and development of children.
6. Describe the evolution of mental health moving from institutions to the community and the
impact that has had on health care disparities.
7. Discuss at length the special populations with mental illness and how this is related to health
care disparities.
8. Know three eras of veterans, how they may view health care and end of life issues.
9. Know the information on the Healthy People 2020 assignment that you turned in to Canvas.

2. Be familiar with diagnostic studies for identifying infection
