Full Shear Notes and Example

This document outlines the procedure for designing shear reinforcement in reinforced concrete beams. It provides the key design equations to calculate the shear capacity provided by concrete alone (VRd,c), the maximum shear capacity at angles of 22 and 45 degrees (VRd,max), and the required shear reinforcement (Asw/s) based on the design shear force (VED). It also specifies the minimum shear reinforcement and details the arrangement and spacing of links. Two examples are provided to demonstrate the full design process.

SHEAR REINFORCEMENT DESIGN PROCEDURE

Calculate design Shear Force, VED

Determine the
VRd,c = [0.12 k (100 ρ1fck)1/3] bwd

VRd,c < VED IF VRd,c ≥ VED

Shear reinforcement No shear reinforcement
required required

Provide the min. links;

VRd,max (22°) = (0.36bwd fck (1 - fck/250)/ (cot θ + tan θ )
Asw/s = (0.08 bw√fck/ fyk )

IF

VRd,max (22°) > VED VRd,max (22°) < VED

Use θ=22° Use θ=45°

IF

VRd,max (45°) > VED VRd,max (45°) < VED

Calculate θ Redesign section

θ= 0.5 sin -1[ VED /0.18bw dfck(1 - fck/250)]

Calculate shear reinforcement;

Asw /s = (VED / 0.78fyk d cot θ)

Calculate the min. links required;

Asw /s = (0.08 bw√fck/ fyk )

Check s < smax Detailing of links

Smax = 0.75d arrangement
Note ECS559/haryati 2015

Example 1.0: Shear reinforcement design

Given:

gk = 12 kN/m

qk = 10 kN/m

fck = 40 Mpa

fyk = 500 Mpa

Solution:

i) Design Ultimate Load, w = 1.35gk + 1.5qk

= 1.35(12) + 1.5(10)

= 31.2 kN/m

ii) V,Ed = V,max = wL/2 = (31.2 x 3.5)/2 = 54.6 kN

iii) VRd,c = [0.12 k (100 ρ1 fck)1/3 ]bw d

k = 1 + (200/d) = 1 + (200/550) = 1.6 < 2 (ok)

ρ1 = Asl/(bw d) = 1470/(300 x 544.5) = 0.01< 0.02 (ok)

VRd,c = [0.12(1.6)(100x0.01x40)1/3](250)(550)

= 56.88 kN

Since VRd,c (56.88 kN)> V,Ed (54.6 kN), therefore no shear reinforcement is
required (OK!)

iv) Minimum links;

Asw/s =( 0.08 bw √fck)/ fyk

=(0.08 x 250 x √40) / 500

=0.25
Note ECS559/haryati 2015

Asw = πD2/4 = π(8)2/4 = 101 mm2

s = 101/0.25 = 404 mm < 0.75d (413 mm)

Provide 8H at 300mm c/c

Note ECS559/haryati 2015

Example 2.0: Shear reinforcement design

Given:

Design load, w = 85 kN/m , L = 8.5 m

fck = 25 Mpa

fyk = 500 Mpa

Tension steel =4H25

Compression steel = 2H16

Size beam (b x d) = 225 x 500 mm

Design shears reinforcement.

Solution:

i) V,Ed = V,max = wL/2 = (85 x 8.5)/2 = 361.25 kN

ii) VRd,c = [0.12 k (100 ρ1 fck)1/3 ]bw d

k = 1 + (200/d) = 1 + (200/500) = 1.6 < 2 (ok)

ρ1 = Asl/(bw d) = 1964/(225 x 500) = 0.017< 0.02 (ok)

VRd,c = [0.12(1.6)(100x0.017x25)1/3](225)(500)

= 75.38 kN

Since VRd,c (75.38 kN)< V,Ed (361.25 kN), therefore shear reinforcement is
required. Use θ=22°.

iii) VRd,max (22°) = (0.36bwd fck (1 - fck/250)/ (cot θ + tan θ )

= (0.36 x 225 x 25 x 500 (1 – 25/250)/ (cot 22° + tan 22°)

= 317 kN
Note ECS559/haryati 2015

Since VRd,max (22°) < V,Ed , check for θ=45°.

iv) VRd,max (45°) = (0.36 x 225 x 25 x 500 (1 – 25/250)/ (cot 45° + tan 45°)

= 456 kN

Since VRd,max (45°) > V,Ed, calculate new θ.

v) θ= 0.5 sin -1[ VED /0.18bw dfck(1 - fck/250)]

= 0.5 sin -1[361.25 x 103 /0.18 x 225 x 500 x 25 (1 - 25/250)]
= 26.2°

Use θ=26.2° /cot 26.2°= 2.03

vi) Shear links,

Asw /s = (VED / 0.78fyk d cot θ)

= (361.25 x 103/ 0.78 x 500 x 500 x 2.03)
= 0.913
Try link H8, Asw = πD2/4 = π(8)2/4 = 101 mm2
Spacing, s = 101/0.913 = 110 mm
Max. spacing, smax = 0.75d = 0.75 x 500 = 375 mm > s (110 mm) …….OK!

Provide H8-110 at c/c

vii) Minimum links,

Asw /s = (0.08 bw√fck/ fyk )
= (0.08 x 25 x√25/ 500)
= 0.180

Try link H8, Asw = πD2/4 = π (8)2/4 = 101 mm2

Spacing, s = 101/0.180 = 559 mm > 0.75d

Provide H8- 300 at c/c
Note ECS559/haryati 2015

Shear resistance of minimum links, use θ=25°

viii) Vmin =(Asw /s )( 0.78fyk d cot θ)

= (101/375) x (0.78 x 500 x 500 x 2.5)
= 129 kN

ix) Links arrangement;

361 kN
x = (361 – 129) / 85.0
129 kN
= 2.73 m

129 kN
361 kN

H8-110 H8-300 H8-110

2.73 m 3.04 m 2.73 m

Additional longitudinal reinforcement

x) Additional tensile force,

∆Ftd = 0.5 VED cot θ

= 0.5 x 361 x 2.03

= 367 kN

xi) Additional tension reinforcement,

As = ∆Ftd/ 0.87fyk

= 367 x 103 / 0.87 x 500

= 843 mm2

Provide 2H25, As.prov= 982 mm2
