Problem Solving Exercise - Cohort Studies PDF

A cohort study follows groups of individuals over time to examine how exposures affect outcomes. Groups are selected based on presence/absence of exposures. There are prospective and retrospective cohort studies - a prospective study recruits groups based on exposures and follows them over time to compare outcomes, like a study of smoking and lung cancer; a retrospective study identifies groups based on outcome and looks back to exposures, like a study of past head injuries and Parkinson's disease. Biases like confounding can be controlled through matching or statistical adjustments. Cohort studies are warranted when randomization isn't possible and when time from exposure to outcome needs examination.

PROBLEM SOLVING

SCENARIO: You want to use a cohort design for your research study.

1. How is a cohort study designed? Cite a specific example (aside from the one in the
reference).

2. How should you go about selecting the study populations?

3. What are the types of cohort studies? (Differentiate between the two types of cohort
studies and cite a specific example for each.)

4. What are the potential biases in cohort studies and how can you control for them?

5. When is a cohort study warranted?
