Water Resource Planning Using GIS Based Decision Support System
Water Resource Planning Using GIS Based Decision Support System
In Jaipur, there are several departments & agencies involved in the planning, management,
development, distribution& monitoring of water resources. The key departments are irrigation
department, agriculture department, ground water department. All these departments are
working in their respective areas according to their mandates, but it was realized by the
government that in the absence of regular co-ordination among the departments the overall
desired goal of integrated water resource planning & management will not be achieved.
Water Resource planning was done to achieve an integrated and multi-sectorial approach to the
planning, development and use of the State’s Water resources. A certain vision, proper
planning and water resource management has always been very challenging for state due to the
absence of proper mechanism for the water planning. As a result proper insight could not be
inferred from the collected data and this has been posing continuous hindrance to the process
of proper planning and management of water resources across the state of Rajasthan. The aim
of this study is to achieve the integrated approach for utilization of the data collected by the
various water departments for proper planning and water resource management by surveying
leveraging the benefits of ICT by identifying spatial gaps for water supply resources.
2. Designing and developing a database which can help in sharing of water related
projects and data thereby consequently helping in better management of water resources
3. Establishing a GIS based Decision Support System to enable the water department in
decision making
execution and operation and maintenance within government and private agencies
6. To collect data on water resource availability, use, quality and make them accessible to
all, to promote sustainable development of water resources in the basins and sub basins of
the state.
7. To promote awareness and understanding for economical and efficient use of water in
drinking, industrial and agriculture use by spreading consciousness through training and
A number of possible directions can be identified when looking at the future scenarios for
GIS based decision support system development. Improvements in standard GIS software
may boost the range of people who could simply use it directly for decision-making.
Advanced customization features in GIS software may allow easier adaptation of GIS for
specific decisions. Superior features for communication with other software may allow GIS
and management, with different groups of users will be taking advantage of these changes for
