DR - Safaa Hameed Faisal Heat Transfer Lecture

The document contains 6 questions related to heat transfer through pipes. The questions involve calculating heat loss, overall heat transfer coefficients, and temperature drops across pipe walls and insulation layers under various conditions. Specific values are provided for pipe materials and dimensions, fluid temperatures, insulation thicknesses and conductivities, and heat transfer coefficients. The answers to each question are also provided.

HW-2-
1- Compare the heat loss from an insulated and an uninsulated copper pipe under the following
conditions. The pipe (k = 400 W/m K) has an internal diameter of 10 cm and an external diameter
of 12 cm. Saturated steam flows inside the pipe at 110°C. The pipe is located in a space at 30°C
and the heat transfer coefficient on its outer surface is estimated to be 15 W/m2 K. The insulation
available to reduce heat losses is 5 cm thick and its conductivity is 0.20 W/m K. take L=1m
Answ(452 W,138 W)

2- A hot fluid at an average temperature of 200°C flows through a plastic pipe of 4 cm OD and 3
cm ID. The thermal conductivity of the plastic is 0.5 W/m2 K, and the convection heat transfer
coefficient at the inside is 300 W/m2 K. The pipe is located in a room at 30°C, and the heat
transfer coefficient at the outer surface is 10 W/m2 K. Calculate the overall heat transfer
coefficient and the heat loss per unit length of pipe. Answ(8.62 W/m2 K, 184 W/m )

3- A steel (k = 15 W/mK) tube with 5 cm inner diameter and 7.6 cm outer diameter is covered
with an insulation (k = 0.2 W/m K) of thickness 0.2 cm. A hot gas at 330°C flows through the
tube with hi = 400 W/m2 K. The outer surface of the insulation is exposed to air at 30°C with ho
= 60 W/m2 K. Calculate:
(a) the heat loss from the tube which is 10 m long.
(b) the temperature drops resulting from the thermal resistances of the hot gas flow, the steel
tube, the insulation layer and the outside air.
Ans. (a) 7251 W, (b) l2°C, 3.3°C, 253°C and 31.7°C)

4- Water flows on the inside of a steel pipe (k = 43 W/mK) with an ID of 2.5 cm. The wall
thickness is 2 mm, and the convection coefficient on the inside is 500 W/m2.◦C. The convection
coefficient on the outside is 12 W/m2 .◦C. Calculate the inside overall heat-transfer coefficient.?
Answ(Ui=13.54 W/m.K)

5- Air flows at 120◦C in a thin-wall stainless-steel tube with h=65 W/m2.◦C. The inside diameter
of the tube is 2.5 cm and the wall thickness is 0.4 mm. k =18 W/m・ ◦C for the steel. The tube is
exposed to an environment with h=6.5 W/m2.◦C and T∞ =15◦C. Calculate the overall heat-
transfer coefficient and the heat loss per meter of length. What thickness of an insulation having k
=40 mW/m・ ◦C should be added to reduce the heat loss by 90 percent?. Answ(q=220W)

6- A thick-walled tube of stainless steel [k =19 W/m· ◦C] with 2-

cm inner diameter (ID) and 4-cm outer diameter (OD) is covered
with a 3-cm layer of asbestos insulation [k =0.2 W/m· ◦C]. If the
inside wall temperature of the pipe is maintained at 600◦C,
calculate: the heat loss per meter of length. Also calculate the
temperature between the tube and insulation (interface
temperature).

Ans: 680 W/m, T =595.8◦C
