Uterus-

● The uterus is a thick, muscular, pear shaped organ that

receives the fertilized oocyte and provides an appropriate
environment for the developing fetus .
● Before the first pregnancy ,the size the uterus is about
5-8cm long and weight about 30-60gm narrow portion
directed inferiorly. After childbirth
, the uterus is usually
larger, then regresses after menopause.

● Uterus is divided into three parts-

1-Fundus -It is upper convex part of uterus, where fallopian
tube are open.
2-Body- It is middle broad portion, which extend from fundus
to the cervix.
3-Cervix-It is lower neck like region. The lumen of cervix,
communicates with body of uterus, via internal osand with
that of vagina via the
external os
● The muscular wall of uterus composed of three layer -
-Endometrium(inner layer) -it provides nourishment to
growing fertilized embryo.
-Myometrium(middle layer)
-Parametrium(outer layer)
Function of uterus:

● Carry out development of embryo, when pregnancy

occurs.
● Uterine Wall form
placenta,which is essential for
embryonic development.
● At the time of delivery (parturition), uterus contract
rhythmically and expels the baby and placenta.
Fallopian tube:
● There are two uterine tubes, also called Fallopian tubesor
oviducts. . The end of the tube near the ovary expands to
form a funnel-shaped infundibulum, which is surrounded by
fingerlike extensions called fimbriae
.
● At the time of ovulation, the fimbriae increase their activity
and create currents in the peritoneal fluid that help propel the
oocyte into the Fallopian tube.
● The journey through the Fallopian tube takes about 7 days.
Because the oocyte is fertile for only 24 to 48 hours,
fertilization usually occurs in the Fallopian tube.
● It convey the ovum from ovary to the uterus

Bartholin's glands:
The Bartholin's glands are two pea sized glands
,located slightly posterior and to the left and right of the opening of
the vagina. They secrete mucus to lubricate the vagina and vulva
during coitus.

Vagina:
The vagina is a fibromuscular tube, about 10 cm long,
that extends from the cervix of the uterus to the outside. It is
located between the rectum and the urinary bladder. . The vagina
serves as a passageway for menstrual flow, receives the erect
penis during intercourse, and serve as the birth canalduring
parturition.
The opening of vagina is guarded by thin membranous structure,
called, hymen. Hymen is slightly perforated to allow menstrual
discharge to drain away. Hymen usually ruptured during first
coitus. It may be ruptured also due to the heavy exercise, sports,
cycling, sudden shock etc.
