1. Find the partial derivatives for the following functions.

(a) f (x, y) = x4 + 5xy 3

3. Find the indicated partial derivative

4. Find the partial derivatives fx (x, y) and fy (x, y) for the following functions

6. The pressure P (in kilopascals), volume V (in liters), and temperature T (in kelvins)
of a mole of an ideal gas are related by the equation P V = 8.31T . Find the rate at
which the pressure is changing when the temperature is 300K and increasing at a rate
of 0.1K/s and the volume is 100L and increasing at a rate of 0.2L/s.

7. The wave equation is given as

when the radius is 300cm and the height is 350cm?

11. Find and classify critical points of the function f (x, y) = y 3 + 3x2 y − 6x2 − 6y 2 + 2.

12. A container with an open top is to have 10m3 capacity and be made of thin sheet
metal. Calculate the dimensions of the box if it is to use minimum possible amount of
metal.
