PART TWO: FILE & FOLDER MANAGEMENT

Task A: Creating Folders and Getting Familiar with File Types


1. Open your desktop
2. Create a folder and name it as “student_id” (e.g.: 1234567). It will become your
home directory
3. Download “Activity1.zip” file from METU-CLASS which contains several files
including (a) music, (b) picture, (c) document and (d) video
4. Create subfolders for each of them in your home directory
5. Copy files in “Activity1” folder to the relevant subfolders that you created in
step3 (hint: for example, copy mp3 files to music folder)

Task B: Searching For Files


1. Click on the start menu, select search
2. Search for all files with extension of .html and .txt
3. Copy one file for each extension to your home directory

Task C: Copying and Moving Files and Hiding Files


1. Copy sumbul.jpeg to your desktop
2. Move ratjump.avi from video folder to your desktop
3. What’s the difference between copy and move?

4. Open “Activity1” folder and find the “my diary.docx” document
5. Examine what type of file this is
6. Copy and paste “my_diary.docx” document to your home directory (do not forget
to paste the document in the appropriate folder)
7. Make this file hidden

Task D: Shortcutting
1. Open “Activity1” folder and find “me-shortcut.xlsx” file
2. Create a shortcut of “me-shortcut.xlsx” file to the desktop
3. Click to the shortcut of “me-shortcut.xlsx” file on the desktop
4. What happened when you clicked on the shortcut? Please discuss with your
classmates
5. Close all files and folders by using task bar
6. Open “Activity1” folder again and delete the “me-shortcut.xlsx” file
7. Go to desktop and click to the shortcut of “me-shortcut.xlsx”
8. What happened?

Task E: Compressing Your Directory and Uploading to METU-CLASS


1. Compress your home directory that you created in task a with your student’s id
2. Upload the compressed file to METU-CLASS
