SSP Plug Presentation For Course

Wellhead plugs are used to plug horizontal trees, primarily in subsea applications. They isolate the wellbore from the environment, allowing re-entry without removing the tree. Standard plugs use elastomeric seals and can move within the profile, while static plugs have mechanically wedged keys that eliminate movement and provide a metal-to-metal seal with higher integrity for subsea use. Both plug types are set and retrieved using conventional slickline techniques.

Wellhead plugs

Q What is a wellhead plug and where are they used ?

A A wellhead plug is used to plug horizontal trees Primarily Subsea but there
are platform horizontal trees

Q Why are they used ?

A The plugs isolate the wellbore from the environment, Allowing re-entry without
having to remove the tree from the seabed or platform

Basic Styles
Styles of
of Plug
Plug
Static Plug (SSP)
• Uses FMC Metal to Metal Seal Technology
• Predominantly used in subsea applications
where seal integrity is critical
• Plug has an elastomeric/non-elastomeric seal
stack as a backup

Standard Plug (SRP)

• Uses elastomeric/non-elastomeric seal type only
• Predominantly used in platform applications
where plugs are retrieved to allow well
intervention
Q What is a Standard plug

The plug is free to move

within the profile
(similar to an X-R plug) Standard Plug
Has 3 from bellow and 4 Pressure from Above
from above Load bearing areas

Plugs are Mechanically set

Pressure from Below

Q What is a Static plug,

• A static plug the keys are wedged into the

Static Plug nipple profile eliminating relevant
movement between them and the No-Go
Pressure from Above
• Eliminate wear on the Metal to Metal seal
and there is less chance of damage to
Chevrons
• Plugs are Hydraulically set
• Has only 1 load bearing area from both
directions
Pressure from Below

There are many different sizes dependant on the completion and tree size
(job specific)

Hydrostatic running tool
features
•Capable of operating with well pressures from zero to
8,000 psi.
•Capable of applying 6,000 lbf to the expander sleeve of
the wellhead plug.
•Allows testing in the lubricator.
•Emergency release mechanism that allows independent
retrieval from the wellhead plug.
•Telltale device indicates the location of the expander
relative to the keys in the final set position.
Hydrostatic running tool features
Anti-pre set pin Allows you to pressure test lubricator

Lockout C ring Stops the pre-set device moving back up

Core Pushes the lock expander mandrel behind keys

Piston guide Pushes core down to activate setting sequence

Pistons x 6 Pulls core down along with piston guide

Shear pin Pin shears when core travels down

Piston housing Keeps pistons moving down straight
Tell tale ring Gives you an indication of the set position
Lock shear pins Pins shear when you jar up to POOH
No-Go ring Sits on the top of lock and pushes up the tell tale ring
