This document is a pre-university test for an open channel flow subject containing 3 sections with multiple choice and numerical questions. Section A contains 10 short answer questions assessing concepts like compound channel flow calculation, free overfall, control points, super elevation in a steady varied flow and types of flow. Section B contains 5 long answer/numerical questions on topics like trapezoidal channel design, gradually varied flow equation, specific energy diagram, backwater calculation and hydraulic jump. RAJARSHI RANANJAY SINH INSTITUE OF MANAGEMENT & TECHNOLOGY

Civil Engineering Department: Fourth Year (7thsem)

Subject Name-Open Channel Flow (NCE-043) (2016-2017)
PRE UNIVERSITY TEST
Maximum Marks: 100 Max. Time: 3 Hr.

SECTION –A
NOTE: Attempt all the questions (2*10=20)

1. What is compound section? Write any two methods of computations of total discharge in case of
compound channels?
2. What do you mean by free over fall? Explain with neat sketches?
3. What is the control point? How would you determine the transitional profile?
4. What is super elevation in SVF?
5. Where a culvert is provided?
6. What do you mean by specific force?
7. Define steaming flow, critical flow and shooting flow?
8. Give the names of water surface profiles that are asymptotic at one end and terminated at the other
end and where does they form?
9. Give the necessary and sufficient condition for a surface to be called as a free surface?
10. A person standing on the bank of a canal drops a stone on the water surface. He notices that the
disturbance on the water surface is not travelling. What is the type of flow in the canal before
throwing the stone? Explain.

SECTION-B
NOTE: Attempt any FIVE of the following (10*5=50)
1. A trapezoidal channel is to have a longitudinal slope of 1 in 1000 and is to be lined with
brickwork. It has to carry a discharge of 20 cumecs and the slope stability requires the side
slopes to be limited to an angle 30 degree. What should be the bed width for the most
efficient section?
dy
2. Show that the gradually varying flow equation is reduced to uniform flow formula if dx =0.
m3
3. A 1 m wide rectangular channel carries a discharge of 2 s . The specific energy depth diagram is
prepared for the channel. It is observed in this diagram that corresponding to a particular specific
energy, the subcritical depth is twice the supercritical depth. The supercritical depth (up to two
decimal places) will be given by?
4. A short reach of a 2 m wide rectangular open channel has its bed level rising in the direction of flow
m3
at a slope of 1 in 10000.It carries a discharge of 4 and its manning’s n=0.01. The flow in this
s
reach is gradually varying. At a certain section in this reach, the depth of flow was measured as 0.5
m
m. The rate of change of the water depth with distance ,dy/dx at this section will be?(take g=10 )
s2
5. A spillway has its crest width at an elevation of 144 m and a horizontal apron at an elevation of 104
m on the downstream side. Find the tail water elevation required to form a hydraulic jump when the
elevation of energy line above the crest is 146.5 m. The cd for the flow can be assumed as 0.73. The
energy loss over the spillway face may be neglected.
6. Explain bottom racks. Classify different types of flows over bottom racks with neat sketch.
7. Derive the differential equation of SVF with increasing discharge with its assumptions.
8. While measuring the discharge in a small stream it was found that the depth of flow increases at a rate
of 0.10 m/h. if the discharge at that section was 25 m 3/s and the surface width of the stream was 20
m, estimate the discharge at a section 1 km upstream.

SECTION-C
NOTE: Attempt any TWO of the following (15*2=30)
1. What do you mean by a culvert? write down its features and explain different types of inlet and outlet
controls in culverts with neat sketches.
2. Uniform flow occurs at a depth of 1.5 m in a rectangular channel 3 m wide and laid to a side slope of
0.0009. if manning’s n=0.015, calculate (a) maximum height of hump on the floor to produce critical
depth, (b) maximum height of hump so that upstream depth will not be affected (c) the width of
contraction which will produce critical depth without increasing the upstream depth of flow
3. A very wide rectangular channel carries a discharge of 8 m 3/s per meter width. The channel has a
bed slope of 0.004 and manning’s n=0. 015. At a certain distance of the channel, the flow depth is 1
m.
Calculate
(a) What gradually varied flow (GVF) profile exist at this section?
(b) At what distance from this section the flow depth will be 0.9 m? (use the direct step method
employing a single step)
