“CATCH ME IF YOU CAN”
What frauds were committed?
Based on the information provided in the movie, Frank Abagnale committed following
frauds
 Identity fakery
 Forgery of documents
 Use of bounced checks
 Use of fake checks
 Printing of fake checks
 Forgery of checks

How the frauds were committed?

Identity Fakery
Airline pilot
Frank started his fake identities with faking as a pilot in Pan Am airlines. To gain the
knowledge, Abagnale posed as a student researching a project about aviation to meet with Pan
Am executives and learn everything he could about both the company and the industry. For
doing so he needed three things. Firstly, he needed the uniform. Getting a uniform wasn't simple.
He called Pan Am's purchasing agent, claimed his hotel lost his uniform, and visited Pan Am's
uniform supplier. He gave the company a fake employee ID number and was on his way.
Secondly he needed an employee id card. Abagnale conned 3M into making him a Pan
Am ID, telling the company he needed to present a sample badge to airline colleagues. Once 3M
made the badge, complete with his picture, Abagnale bought a model Pan Am plane, stripped it
of its logo, and plunked the logo onto his newly made ID.
Finally he needed an FAA license which he faked using the expired FAA license given to
him by the executive of Pan Am during his visit as a student.
He used this identity to encash forged checks without raising any suspicion and also to
keep traveling for free to keep moving away from authorities.

Secret service agent

When he was acting as a pilot, the FBI agent almost caught him but when he arrived his
hotel room he acted as a secret service agent and told the FBI agent that he had captured the
conman and escaped.
Doctor
After being an airline pilot, when he came to know that authorities were looking for him,
he moved to a new place and in apartment rental form he wrote his occupation doctor. He
befriended a doctor in his building and started visiting him and hanging out with him in the
hospital. There, he also befriended with other staff members and finally applied for the job of
intern supervisor using forged degree and other documents.

Lawyer

While working in hospital, he started dating an intern whose father was a state's attorney
general. Through him he got all the information he needed for the field. Despite never attending
law school, it only took three attempts for Abagnale to pass the bar exam in Louisiana

It didn't hurt that state laws let him take the test as many times as necessary. He was hired
as a legal assistant in the corporate law division of the state's attorney general's office.

Forgery of Documents
To fake his identities, he also made fake transcripts and other documents. For example, to
get the job of intern supervisor in hospital, he made a fake transcript of Harvard University.

Check Frauds
He began to commit check fraud when he ran away from his home. In the beginning, to
pay his expenses he started paying people by checks form his own account which was empty and
all those checks bounced.

When he started having problems with this, he began to use counterfeit checks. He forged
the name, amount and account numbers on his own checks and started encashing them. But he
faced an issue as he was a teenager and people were reluctant to accept checks of someone else’s
name from him. So he turned to the fake identities. During this period, he befriended a cashier at
a bank and gained the knowledge of all the details of a check that differ an original check from a
fake one.

Later he bought an official type writer in an auction and started making totally fake
checks and also pasted Pan Am’s logo o it which he got from the Pan Am’s model airplanes
available in market.

He also continued doing the same during his period in hospital and attorney general’s
office.
After this, he bought machines and set up the whole fake check printing press in France
and printed a lot of fake checks and kept on using those checks around the world while still
acting as pilot.

Conclusion
Based on the movie and the video clip, it comes to the light that committing fraud was
very easy at that time but it has become even easier due to the availability of more technology.
So stronger controls need to be placed to avoid all such frauds. In speech, Abagnale also pointed
out that such frauds only take place if someone in the victim party is either doing what he is not
supposed to do or not doing something that he is supposed to do. Which states that making sure
that controls are not bypassed is also very important.
