Conclusion and Recommendation

This chapter presents the conclusions and recommendations from a study that characterized appliances based on their power factor rather than power or current consumption. The researchers achieved their objectives and successfully profiled and characterized appliances using power factor. They also implemented a functional disconnecting method for unknown appliances. The researchers recommend further improving the profiling coding and considering current consumption alongside power factor for a more accurate characterization, since some appliances have the same power factor.

Chapter 5

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the conclusion and recommendations for the entire
study. This chapter will present the effectiveness of the researcher’s device by using
power factor as a means of characterization instead of power or current consumption
of the appliances.

5.1 Conclusion

After all the necessary tests taken, the researchers had achieved their
objectives of this study. Instead of using power or current consumption as means of
characterization, the researchers successfully utilized the use of power factor as the
means of characterizing the appliances as known and unknown. Also, the researchers
successfully profiled the appliances to the Arduino using the IF statement. The
disconnecting means of the unknown appliances was also implemented and tested and
was found out functional.

5.2 Recommendation

The researchers would suggest to make further study on the profiling part of
the device especially on coding the device. Also, the researchers would suggest to
consider the current consumption of the appliances, since some appliances have the
same power factor like resistive loads which has a uniform power factor of unity.
Combining power factor and current consumption can have a more accurate
65

characterization of appliances since it can distinguish the resistive loads by their

difference in current consumption.
