Assignment 2

The document contains 7 problems involving calculating heat transfer via radiation between parallel plates or spherical surfaces with different temperatures and emissivities, both with and without radiation shields placed between the surfaces. The problems involve determining the net heat exchange, heat transfer rates, and percentage reduction in heat transfer from adding radiation shields of varying emissivities between the surfaces.

Two large plates are maintained at a temperature of 900 K and 500 K respectively.

Each plate
has area of 62mm2. Compare the net heat exchange between the plates for the following cases.

(i) Both plates are black

(ii) Plates have an emissivity of 0.5

Two large parallel planes with emissivities of 0.3 and 0.5 are maintained at temperatures of
5270 C and 1270C respectively. A radiation shield having emissivities of 0.05 on both sides is
placed between them. Calculate

(i) Heat transfer rate between them without shield.

(ii) Heat transfer rate between them with shield.

Emissivities of two large parallel plates maintained at 8000C and 3000C are 0.3 and 0.5
respectively. Find the net radiant heat exchange per square meter of the plates. If a polished
aluminium shield (ε = 0.05) is placed between them. Find the percentage of reduction in heat
transfer.

Two long parallel surfaces, each of emissivity 0.7 are maintained at different temperatures and
accordingly have radiation exchange between them. It is desired to reduce 75% of this radiant
heat transfer by inserting thin parallel shields of equal emissivity (0.7) on both sides. What
would be the number of shields?

The net radiation from the surface of two parallel plates maintained at T1 and T2 is to be reduced
by 99% as a result of placing radiation shields between the parallel plates. Calculate the number
of radiation shields to be placed between the two surfaces to achieve this reduction in radiant
heat exchange. Assume emissivity of the radiation shields as 0.05 and that of the surface is 0.8.

Two large parallel plates, one at 1000K with emissivity 0.8 and the other is at 300K having
emissivity 0.6. A radiation shield is placed between them. The shield has emissivity as 0.1 on the
side facing hot plate and 0.3 on the side facing cold plate. Calculate the percentage reduction in
radiation heat transfer as a result of placing the radiation shield.

Liquid oxygen ( boiling temperature = -1820C ) is to be stored in spherical container of 30 cm

diameter. The system is insulated by an evacuated space between inner space and surrounding 45
cm inner diameter concentric sphere. For both sphere ∈ = 0.03 and temperature of the outer
sphere is 300C. Estimate the rate of heat flow by radiation to the oxygen in the container.
