Log Hy Ica: Paragraph Steps Max/MSP

1. This document provides an introduction to creating patches in Max/MSP. It describes how clicking on the icon in the upper left corner of the palette causes an object icon to appear, which is called an object box. 2. The object box is used most often for patching and its function depends on the name given to it by typing a string inside. Selecting the small blue circle on the left edge of the object box brings up the Object List. 3. The Object List displays all the available objects that can be used in patches, organized into categories. This allows the user to select different objects to use in their patch.

1 - First steps wit h Max/MSP

th at are connected togethe r is called a patch (a reference to the old wor ld of

analog modu lar synthesizers that were programmed using physical cable con-
nections called patch cords).

Let's look at our fi rst Max/MSP Object and create our first patch .

By clicking on the icon in the upper left corner of the palette, we cause an
object icon to appear where the flashing target had been (seen in figure 1.2).

Fig.1.2 The object box

The object that appears is a generic object called the obj ect box . It is the object
that we w ill use most often when patchi ng. Its function depends upon the
name that we g ive it when we type a string 2 into its inter ior. Be sure t hat there
is a flashing vert ical cursor inside the object box.3 Using the mouse, point at
the left edge of the object. You w ill see a small blue circle appear with an equal
sign('=') in it. To call up th e Object List, click on the circle. (seen in f igure 1.3).
