by assuming that the slap is continues on one end the thickness of the slap can be estimated from
Table 7.3.1.1:

𝐿 3.75×1000
= = 134𝑚𝑚
28 28
Therefore, 140mm will be chosen for the first trial.

For Beam:
1- Flexure

Assuming the system consist of two spans in each direction (see floor plan for more details).
Therefore, the design will be for the middle beam only.
Assuming ℎ = 550𝑚𝑚
Therefore 𝑑 = 500𝑚𝑚
𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝐷. 𝐿 = (0.55 × 0.3 × 24)
+ (0.14 × 3.45 × 24)
+ (2 × 3.75)
= 23 𝑘𝑁/𝑚

1.2𝐷. 𝐿 = 27.7 𝑘𝑁/𝑚

𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝐿. 𝐿 = 3 𝑥 3.75 = 11.3 𝑘/𝑚
1.6𝐿. 𝐿 = 18 𝑘𝑛/𝑚
Total factored load affecting the middle beam:
27.7 + 18 = 45.7 𝑘𝑁/𝑚
+𝑀𝑢 𝑎𝑡 𝑚𝑖𝑑𝑠𝑝𝑎𝑛 = 45.7 𝑥 8.2^2/14 = 220 𝑘𝑁𝑚
−𝑀𝑢 𝑎𝑡 𝑒𝑥𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑜𝑟 𝑠𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑡 = 45.7 𝑥 8.2^2 / 16 = 192 𝑘𝑁𝑚
−𝑀𝑢 𝑎𝑡 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑠𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑡 = 45.7 𝑥 8.2^2 / 9 = 342 𝑘𝑁𝑚

The Middle Beam

Checking the width of the flange:

16 × 0.14 + 0.3 = 2.54𝑚
8.5 / 4 = 2.125𝑚  controlling
Center to Center = 3.75𝑚
Checking the location of the stress block:

𝑎 = 𝐻𝑓 = 140𝑚𝑚

𝐴𝑠 = 140 = 1353𝑚𝑚2
0.9×420×(500− )
2

1353×420
𝑎= = 15𝑚𝑚
0.85×21×2125

therefore, the beam can be designed as a rectangular beam

220×106
𝐴𝑠 = 15 = 1181𝑚𝑚2
0.9×420×(500− )
2

1181×420

𝜌005 = 0.0135 → 𝐴𝑠005 = 300 × 500 × 0.0135 = 2025 𝑚𝑚2

𝜌𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 0.0033 → 𝐴𝑠𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 300 × 500 × 0.0033 = 495 𝑚𝑚2

The aforementioned As can be provided using:

2 No. 29(1290mm2) for mid-span
3 No. 22(1161mm2) for exterior support
3 No.29(1935mm2) for internal support
2- Shear

𝜙𝑉𝑐 = 0.75 × 0.17 × √21 × 300 × 500 = 88 𝑘𝑁 < 183𝑘𝑁

The spacing shall not be greater than the smallest of:

129∗420 129∗420
𝑆𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 0.062×√21×300 ≤ 0.35∗300

= 625 𝑚𝑚 ≤ 516 𝑚𝑚

𝑆𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 500/2 = 250𝑚𝑚  𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑟𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑔

𝑆𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 600 𝑚𝑚

The spacing at the critical section is:

0.75×129×420×500
𝑆0 = = 137𝑚𝑚 say 125 𝑚𝑚
(194−44)×103
0.75×129×420×500
𝑆1 = = 161𝑚𝑚 say 150 𝑚𝑚
(170−44)×103

Therefore, the required reinforcement can be provided using the following spacing:

1 𝑠𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑠 𝑎𝑡 50 𝑚𝑚
7 𝑠𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑠 𝑎𝑡 125 𝑚𝑚
8 𝑠𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑠 𝑎𝑡 150 𝑚𝑚

𝛥𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = 11.2 + 1.7 + 2.2 = 15.1 𝑚𝑚

The ACI limit for deflection of structural member supporting partitions that are likely to be
damaged by large deflections is: L / 480 = 8500/480 = 17.7mm > 8.4mm.
Therefore, the design is adequate.

For the slab

1- Flexure
Using ℎ = 140𝑚𝑚

𝑑 = 140 − 25 = 115𝑚𝑚

𝐷𝐿 = (1 × 0.14 × 24) + (2 × 1) = 5.4 𝑘𝑁/𝑚

𝜌005 = 0.0135 → 𝐴𝑠005 = 140 × 1000 × 0.0135 = 1890 𝑚𝑚2

𝐴𝑠𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 140 × 1000 × 0.0018 = 252 𝑚𝑚2

𝐴𝑠 𝑎𝑡 𝑚𝑖𝑑𝑠𝑝𝑎𝑛 = 5.3 = 226 𝑚𝑚2 𝐴𝑠 𝑚𝑖𝑛 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑏𝑒 𝑢𝑠𝑒𝑑

𝐴𝑠 𝑎𝑡 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑜𝑟 𝑠𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑡 = 5.3 = 351 𝑚𝑚2
0.9×420×(115 – )

2- Shear

9.6×3.45−9.6×0.115
𝑉𝑢𝑑 = 1.15 × = 18.4 𝑘𝑁
2
0.75×0.17×√21×1000×115
𝜙𝑉𝑐 ⁄2 = 67.2 𝑘𝑁 > 18.4𝑘𝑁
2
Therefore, no shear reinforcement needs to be used.

3- Reinforcement Spacing

the spacing shall not be larger than the smallest of:

3ℎ = 3 𝑥 140 320 𝑚𝑚
𝑂𝑟 450𝑚𝑚

Using No.13 bars (129 mm2) the spacing of the bars is as follows:

At Mid-span: 252⁄129 = 1.95 𝑏𝑎𝑟⁄𝑚

Mid-span spacing = 1000⁄1.95 = 513𝑚𝑚 therefor 320𝑚𝑚 will be used

At Interior support: 351⁄129 = 2.72 𝑏𝑎𝑟⁄𝑚

Interior support spacing = 1000⁄2.72 = 367 𝑚𝑚 therefor 320𝑚𝑚 will be used

At Exterior support: 252⁄129 = 1.95 𝑏𝑎𝑟⁄𝑚

Exterior support spacing = 1000⁄1.95 = 513 𝑚𝑚 therefor 320𝑚𝑚 will be used

also 𝐴𝑠𝑚𝑖𝑛 shall be laid perpendicular to the longitudinal reinforcement to control the
shrinkage and temperature cracking.
Lateral reinforcement bars: 252⁄129 = 1.95 𝑏𝑎𝑟⁄𝑚
Lateral bars spacing = 1000⁄1.95 = 513𝑚𝑚 therefore 320𝑚𝑚 is be used

4- Deflection

𝐸𝑐 = 4700 × √21 = 21538 𝑀𝑃𝑎

𝐸𝑠 = 200000 𝑀𝑃𝑎
𝑛=9

since the new spacing at mid-span is 320mm. a new as has to be calculated:

1000×129
𝐴𝑠 𝑎𝑡 𝑚𝑖𝑑𝑠𝑝𝑎𝑛 = = 403 𝑚𝑚2
320
𝑘 = 0.22
𝑘𝑑 = 0.22 × 115 = 25.3 𝑚𝑚

𝐼𝑒 = 0.973 × 2.3 × 108 + (1 − 0.973 ) × 3.5 × 107 = 2.1 × 108 𝑚𝑚4

𝜆𝐷 = 2 (5 years without compression reinforcement)

14
5×34502 ×(7.15 − 0.1× (6.25 + 11.1))× 10^6
Δ𝐷+𝐿 = = 1.5𝑚𝑚
48 𝑥 21538 𝑥 2.1 𝑥 10^8
4×2×5.4
𝛥𝐷 = = 5.2 𝑚𝑚

0.2×4×3×3
0.2 Δ𝐿 = = 0.8 𝑚𝑚
8.4
0.8×4×3
0.8 Δ𝐿 = = 1.1𝑚𝑚
8.4

Δ𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 = 5.2 + 0.8 + 1.1 = 7.1𝑚𝑚

The ACI limit for deflection of structural member supporting partitions that are likely to be
damaged by large deflections is: 𝐿 / 480 = 3750/480 = 7.8𝑚𝑚 > 7.1𝑚𝑚.
Therefore, the design is adequate.
