piston is 400 mm and stroke of the engine is 600 mm. The crank is rotating at 200 rpm in CW direction. The
crank has turned through 400 from top dead centre and the piston is moving downwards. The stream pressure
above the piston is 0.6 N/mm 2 and below the piston is 0.05 N/mm 2 . The mass of the reciprocating parts is 200
kg. The diameter of the piston rod is given as 50 mm. Find the thrust on the guide bars and crank shaft bearing
and also turning moment on the crank shaft.
(OR)
(b) A steam engine runs at 150 rpm. Its turning moment diagram gave the following area measurements in
mm2 taken in order above and below the mean torque line are +500, -250, +270, -390, +190, -340, +270, and
250. The scale for turning moment is 1 mm = 500 Nm, for crank rotation 1 mm = 5 0. If the fluctuation of speed
is not to exceed +- 1.5% of the mean speed. Determine the cross-section of the rim of the flywheel assuming
rectangular cross section with width equal to 1.5 times the radial dimension. The hoop stress is limited to 3
MPa and density of the material of the flywheel is 7500 kg/m 3.

12. (a) Mass and radius of rotation of four rotating masses A, B, C and D as given in table are to be completely
balanced.

A B C D
Mass (kg) -- 30 50 40
Radius (mm) 180 240 120 150
The planes containing masses B and C are 300 mm apart. The angle between planes containing B and C is 90 0,
B and C makes 2100 and 1200 respectively with D in same sense. Find the magnitude and the angular positions
of mass A and positions of planes A and D.
(OR)
(b) A four cylinder vertical engine has crank 300 mm long. The planes of rotation of the first, third, and fourth
cranks are 750 mm, 1050 mm, and 1650 mm respectively from that of the second crank and their
reciprocating masses are 150 kg, 400 kg, and 250 kg respectively. Find the mass of the reciprocating parts for
the second cylinder and relative angular position of the cranks in order that the engine is in complete primary
balance.
13. (a) (i) A torsional pendulum when immersed in oil indicates its natural frequency of 200 Hz. But when it is
vibrating in vacuum where there is no damping, its natural frequency has been observed as 250 Hz. Find the
value of damping factor of the oil. (8 Marks)
(ii) A shaft of 40 mm diameter and 2.5 m long has a mass of 15 kg per metre length. It is simply supported at
both ends carries the masses 140, 100, 60 kg at 0.8m, 1.5 m and 2 m respectively. Find the fundamental
frequency of transverse vibration. (8 Marks)
(OR)
(b)(i) A machine of 100 kg mass has a rotor of 20 kg with 0.5 mm eccentricity. The mounting spring has a
stiffness of 85kN/m and damping is negligible. If operating speed is 20 π rad/sec and the unit is constrained to
move vertically, calculate the dynamic amplitude of the machine. (8 Marks)
(ii) A shaft of length 1.25 m is 70 mm diameter for the first 280 mm of its length, 120 mm in diameter for the
next 520 mm length, 85 mm in diameter for the next 350 mm length and 180 mm diameter for the remaining
100 mm length. The shaft carries two rotors at two ends. The mass moment of inertia of the first rotor is 80
kgm2 whereas of the second rotor is 50 kgm 2. Determine the frequency of natural vibration of the system if G =
80 GN/m2. (8 Marks)
