Excel - Charts
Charts are wonderful tools to display data visually. If you a Microsoft Excel user,
then you have a variety of chart options at your fingertips.
Charts are used to summarize data, reflecting proportions, trends, pattern and
anomalies in your data far more effectively. Charts provide a visual way of seeing
trends in the data in your worksheet.
It is a visual representation of data from a worksheet that can bring more
understanding to the data than just looking at the numbers which makes analysis
easier.
A chart is a powerful tool that allows you to visually display data in a variety of
different chart formats such as Bar, Column, Pie, Line, Area, Scatter, Sparklines,
Surface, or Combo charts.
With Excel, it is easy to create a chart.
8
Column / bar Charts
One of the most common charts used in presentations and dashboards,
column or Bar charts are meant to compare values to each other. Usually
these are values that have been categorized in some way. The most
common subset for a column chart is one set of data broken up into
categories.
Creating a Column or Bar Chart in Excel
Select your data.
Click the Insert
Click the button on the ribbon for Insert Column or Bar Chart.
Choose the chart style and the chart will pop into your spreadsheet.

Format Chart
The first button allows you to change the
Chart Elements. For example, you could
choose to add or remove gridlines from your
chart by checking or unchecking the gridlines
box. Also you can add chart title etc.
The second button allows you to change the
style or colors of your chart. Again, Excel
offers live previews of your column chart as
you hover your mouse over each available
style.
The third button allows you to filter the data
in your column chart. For example, you could
uncheck the box for Region 3 if you wanted
to see a view of your column chart that only
contains regions 1, 2 and 4

Line Chart
Line charts can show continuous data over time on an evenly scaled Axis. Therefore, they
are ideal for showing trends in data at equal intervals, such as months, quarters or years.
In a Line chart − Category data is distributed evenly along the horizontal axis

22
Line with Markers in Excel
This type of line graph in excel will contain pointers at each data point. This
can be used to represent data for those every point is important.
23
Stacked Line chart
Stacked Line chart – This is a type of line chart where lines of the data
points don’t get overlapped because they will be cumulative at each point.
Let’s assume that we got the sales data of different segments in the
residential market of the company as shown below. We can use a stacked
line chart to show the cumulative of sales in a particular month.
24
Stacked Line chart
25
Stacked Line chart
We can observe the lines are not getting overlapped because the stacked
graph gives us the cumulative at each point.
In our example for the month of Jan, the affordable segment point on the
line is showing the sales data of that particular segment but Luxury segment
point is showing the cumulative of both affordable & luxury segments and
similarly, the super luxury segment is showing the cumulative of affordable,
luxury and super luxury segments together.
26
Pie Chart
Pie charts show the size of items in one data series, proportional to the sum of the
items. The data points in a pie chart are shown as a percentage of the whole pie.
To create a Pie Chart, arrange the data in one column or row on the worksheet.

Combination (Combo) Chart
Combination charts in Excel let you represent two different data tables that
are related to each other, in which there would be primary x-axis and y-axis
and an additional secondary y-axis to help provide broader understanding
in one chart.
The combination charts in excel give a comparative analysis of the two
graphs of different categories and also for the mixed type of data, thereby
enabling the user to view and highlight higher and lower values within the
charts.
30
Combo Chart
Consider the below example wherein we have profit, expenses, and headcount to be plotted in
the same chart by month. Thereby we would have profit and expenses on the primary y-axis,
headcounts on the secondary y-axis and months on the x-axis.
1. Select the entire table to be plotted on the chart.
2. go to insert tab in the ribbon and select combo charts
Year Profit Expenses Headcounts
3. Now select clustered Column charts

Sep $ 56,000 $ 3,785 190 6. To change the background for the charts, click on the
chart so that “Design” and “Format” tab i will appear,
as shown in the red rectangle. Now choose a required
style for the chart from the Design tab. 31

7.Now choose the Axis Option.
Change the maximum bounds and major units as
