Writing Equations Worksheet HWK

The document provides information on writing chemical formulas and balancing chemical equations. It explains that subscripts indicate the number of atoms in an element or compound. Examples are given of chemical formulas such as H2SO4 and Ca(OH)2 and their atomic makeup. The document also contains a set of chemical formulas to determine the number of each type of atom and a set of chemical equations to balance, with the first one worked out as an example.

Equations

Useful information: A number before an element means there are so many lots of that
compound. E.g. 5H2 = 5 Molecules of Hydrogen 3H20 = 3 molecules of water

A small subscripted number after an element means that only the element before it is
present in that amount.E.g. H2SO4 = 2 Hydrogen atoms, 1 Sulphur atom, 4 Oxygen atoms.

A small subscripted number after a closed bracket indicates that only elements in the
bracket are multiplied by that amount. E.g. Ca(OH) 2 = 2 oxygen atoms and 2 Hydrogen atoms
but only 1 Calcium atom.

1. For each example below write how many atoms of each element there are
in the formula (the 1st one has been done for you):
2H2O SnO2 CH4

Hydrogen = 4 Tin......................... Carbon................

Oxygen = 2 Oxygen................ Hydrogen................

3CO2 C2H6 2N2O5

Carbon.................... Carbon.................. Nitrogen.................

Oxygen................... Hydrogen................ Oxygen...................

2. Balance the equations below (the 1st one has been done for you):

1) N2 + 3H2  2NH3 (each side has 2 nitrogen’s and 6 hydrogen’s)

2) ____ KClO3  ___ KCl + ___ O2

3) ____ NaCl + ____ F2  ____ NaF + ____ Cl2

4) ____ H2 + ____ O2  ____ H2O

5) ____ Pb(OH)2 + __ HCl  ___ H2O + ____ PbCl2

6) ____ AlBr3 + ____ K2SO4  ____ KBr + ____ Al2(SO4)3

7) ____ CH4 + ____ O2  ____ CO2 + ____ H2O

8) ____ C3H8 + ____ O2  ____ CO2 + ____ H2O

9) ____ C8H18 + ____ O2  _ __ CO2 + ____ H2O

10) ____ FeCl3 + ____ NaOH  ____ Fe(OH)3 + ____NaCl

11) ____ P + ____O2  ____P2O5
